to get the car, or not to get the car...
i've recently made a deal with my mom. if i get a 3.6 GPA in my first year of college, i'll get $36,000 on a car. im 17 years old, and im getting my license this december, and i dont know if i should get a new car either. i want the car in stick, and plan on teaching myself how to drive stick with my boyfriend's bmw. i tell my friends that i want the 8, and they start listing everything they heard that is wrong about the car and tell me to get somthing else, like the nissan z, evo, or sti. i really really have my sights set on the rx8, and i've done a lot of research. i really would like a shinka, too.
well why im posting here is because i thought id get some opinions of drivers, since i dont know anyone who drives an 8. so would it be a good idea to get this as my first car?
edit: i just realized that theres a simlar topic. oops, sorry

your parents reward your good grades by buying you a car?
isnt that what they call 'negative re-inforcement'? (or something along those lines, by rewarding you for doing something that is pretty much expected)
i remember in school, if i did good, i got a 'keep it up'. if i did bad, i got a 'you arent going out til all your homework is done and your grades improve'. if i did REALLY well, i got a dinner at a restaurant of my choice. nothin like a car though....

but seriously, the shinkta is a beautiful 8. the ting u got over a 350z is that everyone has one... i will say it is powerful, but totaly over rated. Evo... its a mitsubishi... need i say more? with 36k, damn girl get what ever the hell u want. hit the books, and good luck in college... its a bitch, but beleave me, it helps..

...or just do it and be happy for the rest of your life :D
you decide

Ultimately the decision is yours, but you need to take a good hard look at the 350 Z. It has problems as well. Lots of tire issues, tranny issues, and Nissan getting some bad marks for not handling it very well. However, some of those issues may be resolved by the time you're in the market. Evo - well, if Mitsubishi is still around by then you could get a new one, but ..... And the STI - don't know much about it other than it's rather uninspiring to look at.
I just got my 8 in March and I had it down to 2 cars - the 8 and the 350 Z. Went with the 8 because of: GREAT LOOKS, not a common car on the road, back seat that you can actually use (2-seater for a daily driver was not good for me), little less costly than the Z (especially since I got a leftover 04), and the problems with the Z were not something I wanted to deal with. It seems that most of the 8 problems are driver-induced. Meaning, if you know how to drive it and take care of it, you probably won't have any more problems than in any other car. I love mine (lightning yellow) and have had no problems.

I think the 350 has a few more problem than the 8. I have two friends that own one. Both have under 20k miles and both had to have their tires replaced, one of them twice. One of them had to have their tranny replaced and its acting up again. Both of them had to have the ball bearing replaced. I have 24k on my 8. Had almost no problems with it. The only problem was that the drivers side taillight got some condensation from the inside, but Im having it replaced by ROTO mazda right now with no questions asked.
I say go for it, get the 8 , you wont regret it.
