Getting nervous about making my move.

Getting nervous about making my move.
My desire for a 2006 Shinka copper red is building very steadily. But I'm starting to get nervous about how available it's going to be by the time they hit the dealer lots in my area (Maryland). I see that many of you guys getting an '06 have already special ordered sight unseen. I have never bought anything significant without seeing it, holding it, and checking it out thoroughly. This will be my first rx8 and, although I'm confident that I'm going to LOVE it, I just can't bring myself to put money down on it without prices being released and without being able to actually sit in it first. Then again, I'm nervous that I won't get the package, trim, etc. I'm dreaming of. (I see that it's touted to be a limited edition anyway.) How great is the risk of not having it available if I wait til it reaches my area? Any opinions?

I just ordered mine - Shinka Copper Red with spoiler, appearance package and rotary accents.
The car is not changing in any material way, so how risky is it? Go look at any RX8 and just visualize the color.
Here is a thread with pics of the Copper Red my Dad took for me at the Detroit Auto Show. He said the car looked spectacular in person and that sent me straight over to my Mazda dealer.

My dealer is someone I have dealt with a number of times and he's always been a straight shooter. He said that only 1500 Shinkas are available for the NA market and if you want one better order quick. I don't know yet if I have one or not. I expect I'll get one but I don't think you'll get a Shinka if you wait too long.

If you order one, is there a penalty if you un-order it. So, if in 6 months or whenever it is you decide you don't want one you can take your name off the list scott-free and then get whatever it was you wanted. That's what I'd do.

If your 'sit in it' concern is regarding the look and feel then you can get that by test driving any new or used RX-8 with the same trim and transmission. If your concern is defects, well, I would make sure the contract specifies under what circumstances you can refuse to take delivery of a damaged, defective or deficient vehicle. Your deposit should be protected, the only risk would be how much time it takes to deliver a perfect car.
I wouldn't worry about not getting one. I think you're more at risk for not getting one when you want it. A pre-order is likely your best move to get it soonest (and I know how the fever can grip a person who badly wants an RX-8), but I doubt they'll sell out.

Thanks for the advice. I checked out the schedule for Mazda's auto shows. I'll take a look at the '06 there in a couple weeks. Although I've already test driven an '05 a couple months ago, I think I'll try to find one to test drive again right before the show. Then I'll know for sure if I'm in love. If the prices are out by then, I'll be ready to pre-order that day.

I'm not worried about pricing as I am ordering under the Ford Friend and Family plan via a friend's father (retired Ford worker). I'll get it for something less than dealer cost and figure their pricing can't change that much from year to year for the Shinka.
Just heard from my dealer - order confirmed and build date is first week of March!
