Getting an RX8 for college
#51
I agree with the above statement. I learned a lot about the RX8 going on mountain runs with my local Mazda club but quickly found that the car was much more capable on the track.
Fact is, the second you stop respecting the car it kills you.

True with any piece of large machinery, but yeah, the 8 is very seductive and will lure you into a false sense of security. It can and will bite your head off if you start getting all "fast and furious" with it. So just don't drive like an idiot and you'll never have a problem.

If you guys are talking about which car will get more attention from girls you know what I always say... don't rely on your car for that... pretty damn lame thing to to.
But while we're on the subject, he mentioned a new Camaro. You guys are kidding yourselves if you think an 8 would draw more attention than a 2010 Camaro. Just a fact.

If you want a stereotype, go with the Camaro. If you want class, go with the 8. The 8 always demands respect. It's the most unique production car on the road...period.

As much as I LOVE the new camaro....they will be a dime a dozen after they come out. It's gonna be nothin but a stereotype of rich ignorant kids driving the z28 that mommy and daddy bought for them.

good thing he wasn't getting a 350z because if he had posted this on their forum, he would have gotten much more criticism.
what high school do you go to?
#57
Any teenager that get's a car that is completely paid for by their parents EVEN paid insurance AND gas is the epitome of a stereotype of just another "spoiled oc kid" just another that will add on, even if he get's the 8....

And this kid woulda been flamed too if he didn't come out with some respect in his original post.
Either way...good choice in the 8! The community is obviously solid..and even 8 owners are very honest in their feelings..so you know you'll always get str8 shooting....unless that is you start asking about ebay universal turbo kits and ebay performance chips
#58
Some of us can't flame because we have parents paying for our cars. Mine pay for insurance and paid for half of my car. It's not so bad... so long as I'm working and stay in school I get to keep my car.
#60
Oh yeah and OP I would agree I wish I had a beater car because I am constantly worried about my car getting vandalized or door dinged...
Your car will get trashed on a college campus, just a fact.

I would have a tendancy to think that there are lots of nicer college kids cars on the UC Irvine campus and that it may not be as bad as a typical campus.
Maybe that's just thinking positive. The fact that you're NOT parking in the dorm parking will make a positive difference. It's the dorm parking that's really bad and cramped. You'll probably be street parking most of the time I'd imagine seeing as your commuting.
It could get bad, but I doubt it will be the horror story that is the dormitory parking lots.

Street parking? U must not have spent much time in SoCal partner, or its Universities, lol. Chances of gettin street parking is VERY slim. The OP will be parking in the general lots, commuter or not. Might get lucky with parking garages (like UCLA has) and park way at top near a pillar.

hmm, the rx-8 is the only car I've really known since I was 16 and am now 18. If you don't push it, it just handles and brakes all too well to mess up with and the DSC is pretty good for not being restrictive but still not letting you spin around in the rain if you give it too much gas.
If you decide to play... STAY AWAY FROM CURBS. I've driven about 40,000miles in just over 2 years, I love my rx-8. I think I've about used this one up though after 2 semi-serious accidents. Within a month of owning an rx-8 and a driver's license, the first thing on any new RWD owner's mind is drifting/donuts/etc. not snap oversteer. I thought I was cool because I had the best lap time in the Audi School autocross and I did really well, but FWD isn't **** compared to RWD. When the back end comes out and you dont know what to do the car can spin viciously in the opposite direction you'd expect it to and then CRACK POP, broken wheel, bent linkages, and two side impacts are deployed. Also DONT LIFT OFF THE GAS MID-CORNER, my more recent stupid mistake that I knew better than doing... There was this turn I had been going increasingly fast through and I had gotten up to 85mph through it. I think I must have gotten on the gas too early, because the front got light and I panickedly lifted. The front was planted now, but the back of the car flew out, I overcorrected and went over a curb breaking 3 wheels, mangling my beautiful multi-link rear suspension, tweaking the lower front wishbone, and 2 more side impacts gone. So, uh, be careful? You don't seem like you would drive that aggressively though.

Yeah, to my knowledge there are multiple parking structures at UCI so I'm not too worried about the car getting beat up.

Ya haha there are a bunch of nice cars there. Thx so much

get a beater!!!! or pay for your own car so you appreciate it. Teenagers shouldn't drive nice cars unless they pay for them.
So, as a girl, when you take a girl out and she says "oh, nice car (which she will!!! its an rx8..) how can you afford this?" it's not as impressive when you have to say your parents paid for it.

I got my 8 my senior year in high school and I'm about to be starting my 4th year of college. I've never had any vandalism issues, the only damage I've had was when I was in grocery store parking lots. I've never felt like the car has been too much for me. Of course that could be interpreted as me being young and not realizing it's too much, but it really just depends on how you treat it. If you're responsible about it, there shouldn't be any issues. I'll admit, I've done a few stupid things in the 8, but I quickly got over that stuff. If you dont think you'll be needing the extra space at all, then the 8 is a good car in my opinion. If you think you might need moderate space, then go for something like the MS3.
If I were considering those cars right now, I might go for the camaro, but I'm pretty sure I would have got into more trouble with that car than I did the 8. I'm guessing it wont be too hard to get some serious power out of the camaro. I would honestly recommend something like the 8 to start with. It's a lot of fun and looks nice with a good community behind it. Depending on how your parents are, you might be able to trade to something else down the road if you feel like something different.

Yeah, there's no way I'd drive like that on the streets...not like I even know how to drive like that in the first place :P lol
Speaking of driving lessons...how would you go about getting those?

Skip Barber ftw
They have one at Laguna Seca coming up on Jul 20&21. The best part is you get to drive an RX-8 in the school and mazda's only other RWD car, the MX-5 (miata). RWD and FWD are so different, I regret taking the Audi school instead of this. I just wasn't aware of this school at the time. I highly recommend doing a school where you get to safely push the vehicle to its limits, especially when it's the same model as the one you'll be owning.

it's worth it. haha, if you're worried that the 8, one of the lowest torque, msot forgiving, and best handling RWD sportcars on the market, will be too much to handle you definitely need to take some driving classes. skip barber is the real deal too

So I just requested a quote for an 09 Touring Velocity Red . I'm so excited! Haha. What kind of deals do you guys think I'll be able to get? Would I be able to get a better deal if I waited into summer or even fall?
