Do you have just one key? it may be the valet key. The valet key does not unlock the glove box. The mazda dealer, with your vin, can make you a new master key.

I have an 04 and my Valet key is gray in color and the regular key is black. I am not sure about the other years, but there is usually a way to tell them apart. I have no reason to not believe the previous poster, but I have never tried it, and now I will when I get home

I had this happen, no work around, I had to break it open and replace the glove box. Not a common issue.

Oh, was it hard to do? Is there a way to just replace the latch instead the whole thing? Seems like kinda hard for me, I didn't see any screws outside anywhere...

Hmm.. Dealer tech desk service helped me to strike the whole thing apart... Cost me nothing.. And now I ll just spend 60 or 70 to buy a new box... Seems a good deal...

Yeah I thought I was the only one this ever happened too, this is the first time I have heard of anyone else having the problem. But, in ten years my glove box has been opened a gazillion times so it's whatever.

I had that problem a few months after I bought my RX-8. Locked it and I could not unlock and open it after that. I was able to unlatch the hindge from the bottom, reached around and unlocked the mechanism with the help of a flathead without destroying anything. And truth be told, 9krpmrx8, there is a spring inside that came loose preventing the striker to not move once locked and closed. Fixed it at no cost and in half-an-hour.

My key works fine the the used 09' glove box I purchased. But locking it is dumb, a 5 year old could bust it open.
