yea okay ssooo i can definitely agree with the whole mileage thing. its very agreeable and now that i think about it, i usually have to tank up more with the neon ive got now cuz im well. . . . not the every day conservative driver but why do some particular people have problems while most other people really dont?? is it just luck if you get an rx-8 in good shape or not?? the more i look and research through this message board, the more i see people saying that this is a high maintenance car? like what do you really mean by that??

What everyone above said, plus do some investigating into the past owner/owners....things like geographic location, age, even to the point of contacting the previous owner for a chat. If all poss you want one that had only one owner prior to yourself, im sure you know that.
And of course check the car's service/maintenance history as well.
Is likely alot of the people with problem 8's are 2nd or 3rd owners from where the previous owner didnt take care of car.(or THEY didnt take care of it)
Like Chris said, this isnt a honda civic fom which you can miss oil changes and service bulletins and still run the **** out of it. Have to take care of it and "listen" when she isnt acting right.

i am not sure where the hive is but if it is anywhere like tn then it is not bad in the winter. I drive around with 300 treadwear summer tires and we got our first snow fall the other day, granted it was just a dusting but still enough to mix with the water on the road and make it a little slick. Just had to slow down and it was fine. I do notice the back kicks out at every intersection making a left or right turn if you are accelerating due to the cold road surface and hard tires not wanting to grip but you are in control of it doing that anyway with your right foot.

The RX-8, in my opinion, is an enthusiasts car. Simply said, it won't fit into the mold of an everyday driver. It might demand a little bit more attention in terms of maintenance. The reward is a car that handles wonderfully and is well balanced; it begs you to drive enthusiastically. The price to you is a little bit more oil consumption (which is normal for the Wankel engine) and fuel economy in the realm of many other high-performance cars. As to the oil consumption, by the time your engine is broken in you'll probably find yourself adding a quart or less between 3000 mile oil changes. Big deal. $3.00?
Buy it, drive it, enjoy it. And enjoy the difference: the turbine-like smoothness; the incomparable 9000 RPM redline; the fantastic handling and braking.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot: as with most small displacement engines, you'll have to learn how manage the RX-8's small engine to get the most out of it. Skill.

rx8 is the sickess car to drive that is out right now under $33,000. if u even have second thoughts just go c one test drive it on a winy road n push the metal 2 tha pedal.(make sure is 6speed), then go test drive a evo or what ever ulse and ull c what we all proud owners of rx8s r talking about

The Engine should last as long or longer then a piston engine. In race cars rotary engines last far longer between rebuilds then piston engines. After a rotary won the 24 Hours of Daytona the engine was stripped down and it was found to be in excellent condition, no rebuild was necessary which is unheard of for a piston engine. Also piston engines weaken with age until they die, rotary engines get stronger with age until the end.
The only real concern is an engine failure issue which was addressed but may not have been resolved. The verdict is still out on this though some fanboys on this list will tell you otherwise.
As for gas mileage the car is the pits. A rotary is by its design 15% to 20% less fuel efficiency then a piston engine, it's simple physics no way around it. On the Highway my car gets 18 to 22mpg, in Chicago city driving I see 11 to 14mpg depending how aggressive I drive, 14mpg is babying the car.
In the snow with proper tires the RX will do just fine as well, if not better, then other rear wheel drive cars. It will not be as good as a front wheel drive car or AWD but not bad. I run All Season Ultra performance and I can get around in Chicago snow with dedicated snow tires it is much better.
