Mmm, German Perfection.
3 series is truly an outstanding car. Overall one of the best cars. It's not best in just one thing, but it has a little bit for everyone.
Oh and I just LOVE those horizontal LEDs new BMWs use. They're gorgeous.

OP wrote - the power delivery is quite similar to the rx.. pulls in a linear fashion to around 7K RPM.
Maybe feels that way but the 330i is much faster then a RX-8 and definitely an upgrade in motor vehicles of course it cost more too. I guess not though a 07 - 08 GT RX-8 will cost you $33k so you did make a great deal.
Just because you drive a high and mighty BMW don't mean you have to leave come back and tell us what she does or the differences you notice between the two performance, driving thrill and curb side appeal.

Straight line, 330 is probably faster unless you want to dump your clutch at 7k, and even then 330 would probably win. Rx8 has a huge advantage on track and handles way better than the bmw. They're totally different cars though. One's a pure mid-engined lighter sports car, and other is a well balanced performance sedan. Apples and oranges.

let me just say that this board is awesome. you guys are way cooler and more open-minded than the MR2 crowd, and head and shoulders above the bimmer forums.
I introduced myself on the bimmer board (e90fanatics.com or something) and got zero responses.
My car does have the cool rear horizontal LED tail lights. Cool how they illuminate the tube instead of the typical multiple red dot style. The headlights that turn with your steering wheel are also great. it actually works very precisely and with little turning needed (just slight movements activates it).
so far i feel like i got more looks in the rx. i don't really care about that too much, though.
The rx definitely felt more intense and raw. The 2-3 shift in the rx at high rpms was amazing to me. i also liked the seating position better (low, with feet straigh ahead).
the bmw, as expected, has an almost-perfect fit and finish. the thing is vault-quiet and the door-shut is top notch. very few rattles, too.
it's kinda weak off the line, but from 4500 to 7RPMs it's got a great feel and exhaust note. i think the rx would jump ahead in a drag race for few seconds and then the 330 would pull ahead a little.
my favorite feature is the LED puddle lights under all four door handles. it's also got power side bolsters which are cool.
gas mileage so far, 22 mpg. but i've been driving it hard. we'll see how it goes when i settle down. i got 17 tops with the rx8.

I am on the MR2 forums. It is funny how many people say the same thing, especially the long term users.

Thanks for the update. People who drive the 8 are discerning drivers. The 8 doesn't attract the idiot fanbois who just want the fastest 0-60 times. Not saying faster 0-60 times wouldnt be welcome.

I was looking into getting a 2006 530i, very nice car a good driver's car for it's size. But, I didn't want to take a hit with the trade-in value on my 8. I have less than 20k on my 04 GT 8, and the dealer wanted to give me only 14k for it. Bummer.
Plus I'm worried about the maintenance cost of European cars even though this 530i still had some warranty. Also the 530i requires premium fuel, I've heard you cannot run 87 in these cars. Is this true?

You should be running premium in the rX8. I think all Bimmers need premium fuel due to the complexity of the engines. You’ll see this as a requirement for lots of new cars as they try to get better gas mileage to meet new CAFÉ standards.
As soon as you need new tires I’d put something other than run-flats one, cheaper and will improve the ride immensely. Also once you are out of warranty just search on some Bimmer boards for a good indy mechanic. No reason to pay over $100/hr at the dealer. I bet it will be easier to find an indy BMW mechanic than a rotary one.

buy a certified bmw. no maintenance for 4 years from original delivery date and a 100k or 6 year bumper-to-bumper warranty.
i don't even pay for brakes until some time late 2010.
regarding tires, i'm gonna go for the non-run-flats once my current run-flats die. tires are the only thing not covered by the maintenance program.

The RX-8 *is* mid-engined; the engine is between the front and rear axles, the defining criterion. Sports car is a fuzzier term.
#47
It is technically a mid-engined car. What I meant by pure is that it was designed from beginning to handle great, they took everything into consideration, weight, design, gravity, mass, whatever. Although I have no doubt BMW did this as well, but they also couldn't go too raw because after all BMW still is a luxury performance car, not a pure performance car, like S2000 or perhaps your Elise which RX8 is much closer to.
