Just my op/ed.

For the guys who manage to haul their family around in an 8 as the main family car. That's fine and great if you live in areas where it never snows. Also me being 6'3" and my wife being 5'7" that doesn't help anyone who wants to take a ride in the back.
I'm in a situation where I can't afford a second car. If i was able to get an RDX on top of my Rx8 I would. A few years from now I plan on getting someones' used up turbo 8 or FD. Hell, the value on the 8's depreciate so fast that within a few years time I could probably get a used 8 for less than 93 Rx7 TT's.
My 8 was fun to drive, despite refueling every 190-200 miles and not having any cargo room.

I traded in a Nissan Murano for the 8 because I realized having a "family car" was killing me. But then the 8 has proven to be a fine family car for as much as I need a family car. I could see going to a used S4 Avant if you really needed cargo room.

I have 3 kids and I didn't have any trouble getting them in and out of the 8. Actually having to open the door for them is kind of a safety feature. It prevents them from opening the door and jumping out into potential traffic when I take them to the bus stop. But we also have a minivan and a Mazda 3 which I use alot to haul around my peeps.

Good luck man, I can understand. I purchased a house a little over 2 years ago, Home Depot, and Lowes were my weekend getaways for the work that had to be done. I usually borrowed my buddies Nissan Xterra, or just rented the Home Depot rental truck, but it was a pain in the ***.
