Got beat by an 8 yesterday

I have a few coworkers with heavily modded stangs.
Whenever they ask me to race, I say "sure, but we're racing down *twisty and winding canyon road of my choice*."
I'm still waiting for one of them to take me up on it....
I don't think they will either, seeing as how stangs seem to end up facing backwards on things like corners. (Coworker managed to spin out on a highway onramp with his girlfriend in the car. Wasn't even trying to go fast, just hit something slick and the back end came right around.)

Yes. That's the only reason I bought a RX-8. Granted the rotary was a nice bonus, but the real reason for my purchase was that the RX-8 handles well and stops well and has a fixed roof. If my purpose was to go fast in a straight line I certainly would not have purchased a RX-8.

^^^^^ im with ya on that i love the rotary engines but if i wanted something to drive striaght line i would of picked a 350z or stang something in that area, i dont like to drag anyways.... i guess its all personal opinions

All i can say is NITROUS. Just go out and drop $1000 on a ZEX setup (kit/remote bottle opener/labor) as well as get street clutch, midpipe/supercat, cat back and good tires. With this setup and some practice, you should be able to smack around the neighborhood WRX, Stang, 350z, g35 crowd...not to mention the always popular Honda ****
....and yes i DO know from experience as i have this setup and have been out slapping them since.

There's always somebody faster.

What is the point of this thread? First you say that you got beat by an 8, without saying what car you own...Then you state which car you own, and that you were just kidding and that the race was not even close...Seriously, if your going to post stupid pointless threads like these...do it somewhere else.

Jesus, even a thread about the RX-8 WINNING a street race just turns into a bunch of idiots complaining about how "slow" the 8 is. I am so sick of this ****.

Drove Both Mustang GT and RX-8 and Now Am Here
So what does that tell you? The Mustang was nice, had extra stripes and scoops, 18" wheels. But it came down to three things.
First the Mustang made me feel 19 and I am 44. At 44, I can drive better than at 19 so the handling is much more appreciated than just straight line acceleration. We don't have to talk about brakes--the Mustang will never stop as fast as the RX-8. And hey, the RX-8 is not slow, you just have to keep all 8000 usable rpms in action.
Second the Mustang beat me up on roads I drive every day and at 35,000 miles a year, who needs to be beat up. The rear axle hopped all over the place and I felt the car would not hold up well over time.
Third, the Mustang looks like a Mustang and will, no matter what you do to it, be a Mustang. For those of us professionals in the world who have image to keep, hey, the RX-8 beats the Mustang hands down and it looks like it costs twice as much.
Now, how do I get that front spoiler on.....and how many months til my warranty is over?

You're telling me that mustangs dont have class and arent good enough for professionals??? Let me tell you something. Mustangs have plenty of class. They even have a cologne... and that has $25 worth of class.... found at sears....

Hmmmm.... trying to be very descreet in saying this. With a capable driver behind the rx-8, a 5000rpm launch and nailing every shift with the TC/DSC turned off you can walk a 04' and under Mustang down. I know , because i have done it many times, even switched cars with my buddy who owns a 02 GT and my buddy in my 8 walks away slowly.
So no , its not impossible to do, you just have to launch 8 right and keep the 8 in full boil. The 8 can take out alot of cars from launch and from a roll, the key is knowing how to drive your 8. But cars like the stang, if you mess up , there is no recovery as all you will be seeing is tailights.

who cares if it wins in a line, really?
i remember i went to a local forum meet after the local auto-x, and having 3rd TTOD and there was this one annoying-***-cocky-loser that drives an mr2 and was talking to another mr2 owner, in which he felt the wrath of the 8 when i took two seconds off his time, "how can an rx8 beat an mr2's time?"
lucky for him i was blitzed and was slurping on my route 44 powerade slush with orange added so I didn't bitch him out right then and there that rx8s know what's up when there's a coure with plenty of corners, chicanes, slaloms, and decreasing radiuses involved.

Winning Races is not just about Horsepower
Ever watch pinks? Great show. How many guys with the faster car lose not due to negotiating but due to bad starts or bad shifts? It happens all the time. Reaction time and launching is 50% of straight line racing.
If you both launch well, yes some cars will smoke an RX-8. But how much fun is it when the guy next to you is asleep at the switch and you smoke his butt by hitting the light 6 tenths sooner--which is not much at a stoplight but a block down the road is several car lengths...err, I mean, at the 1/8 mile mark.
In the twisties it is still a good part the driver. I saw a driving school instructor/professional racer in a BONE STOCK Neon kicking BMWs at Gateway International all weekend because of skill. They just could not keep with him in the corners. It was a blast to watch.
Now, if you add the turbo and get a good reaction time, and know how to clip an apex.....

Twists and turns are great fun in our 8's but lets be realistic here....day to day how many times do you catch yourself on a windy road with another sportscar compared to a street light or highway? I for one can only remember one time that I found myself in really tight twisties with another car.....and just like skill at drag racing there is skill needed in the turns. That one and only time I found myself in the twisties I was stuck right on the *** end of a 2001 Carerra 4S in my '99 T/A.....as an ex Porsche tech I can say that he wasn't pushing his car to the limits as I was mine, but that just goes to show you that the driver can mean the difference between the winner and loser in the turns as well. SOOOO lets not get our pantys all in a ruffle over the twisties topic because I'm sure there are plenty of Mustang drivers that drive good enough to own many RX8 owners in the turns too. Not to mention you guys do know they make aftermarket suspension components for Mustangs that make them handle like they are on rails too right?

I really liked the new Mustang GT and wanted to get it until the test drive.
It's too bad that the interior is made by Rubbermaid. The quality is worse than the Tonka truck I had when I was six.
I test drove one at Carmax and the dash rattled really loudly. The salesman was furiously trying to stop it to no avail. I went onto the Mustang forums and apparently lots of people have this problem.
