Hehe, aside from a K&N Filter and possibly an exhaust I don't think I'm going to modify it much. Not that I don't want to, but I need to save for college as I probably won't have a job for some time then.

Btw, the car is currently at Ed Morse Mazda, and apparently the 4206F recall has not been done yet. They're doing it now

Well, looks like I'm getting a new engine due to low compression.
Here are the numbers they gave me, I do not know at what rpm they were taken.

Rotor 1- Hot: 5.2, 5.1, 5.1 / Cold: 6.6, 6.4, 6.4
Rotor 2- Hot: 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 / Cold: 6.0, 6.2, 6.3

New engine is on order, and I'm using the vehicle until the engine is here as the only symptom it has shown is vibration and a bit of hesitation near idle. I know you guys generally like to know the history of engines-to-be-replaced, but I don't have any records except that it hasn't been serviced by mazda recently, and did not have the 4206F recall done until today.

I know it is likely discouraging that you have to have your engine replaced right after you purchase your car, but look on the bright side... Your baby's engine is going to have 47k less miles on it than previously

When I saw that the recall had not been completed I kinda expected it. Yea though, it will be nice to be able to start fresh and keep maintenance and records up to date with the new engine.

Can't complain though, it's free just before the warranty runs out, and I've still got the car until the engine comes in. It can't take more than a few days to actually install it I figure?

Got the car back today!! :D
Ended up getting a remanufactured engine, 2 leading spark plugs, and a catalytic converter.

I've got about 50 miles on the new engine, and boy is it smooth! Only thing is, I've still got a cel, and for the first few miles I got some brief hesitation nearing 6K rpm. After driving for a bit though it seems fine. I'll clear the cel tomorrow and have it read if it reappears.

Anyhow, I'm going to take it easy on it for a thousand miles or so, then switch to Royal Purple and "drive it like I stole it"!

I forget . . . . . . . . . someone help me out here . . . . . . . the break in period . . . . are you supposed to hit 6000 with only 50 miles on it?

No, I believe they suggest not exceeding 4000 until 1000 miles. I did 6200 or so pulling onto the main road, then kept it closer to the suggested 4K. Just noticed the hesitation approaching 6K that time and later when I got close in a similar situation to there it was fine.

Edit: Dealer told me to just keep it easy in general, so I'll stay as close to 4K as comfortable with me being new to manual and taking so long to get started.

Edit2: Went to look this up again, on Racing Beat's site they state that Mazda does not have any RPM specific break-in requirements. Racing Beat suggests the 4K for 1000 miles.

"No special break-in is necessary, but a few precautions in the first 1000 KM (600 miles) may add to the performance, economy, and life of your Mazda.

- Don’t race the engine.
- Don’t maintain one constant speed for long.
- Don’t drive constantly at full-throttle or high engine RPM for extended periods of time.
- Avoid unnecessary hard stops.
- Avoid full-throttle starts."

A review of the Mazda RX-8 Service Manual Highlights revealed the following information regarding break-in:

"A fluorocarbon resin coating has been added to the trochoid surface (rotor housing) for improved initial break-in."

Racing Beat's Guidelines

The Mazda guidelines are reasonable and prudent. If you have any questions or uncertainly regarding the break-in period, we suggest you follow these official recommendations.

We receive many requests for our recommended break-in procedures. The following are Racing Beat's recommendations:

- For the first 1000 miles do not accelerate under full throttle.
- During the first 1000 miles do not exceed 4000 RPM.
- For miles 1000-2000, expand the RPM upwards - but do not accelerate at full throttle.
- Over 2000 miles, full throttle and high RPM is acceptable.

In summary, our guidelines offer a progessive method to increase the working loads placed on the engine.

What a blast

Over the last 6 months I looked at alot of cars, think of a sportscar, I probably researched and drove it.

First trip out in the RX and I thought this car is just a blast, then the dealer warned me about oil, shutting it off cold, problems that others have had, and nearly had me talked out of it.

Then I came here, as well as visited other sites where OWNERS describe the experience and I have to agree with all of you.

Any drawbacks are completely overlooked with a car that is so much fun.

Thanks for all the information, the FAQ's, and the honesty.

Simply put, I am having a blast with my new RX.

I went with the sport, I am not a big fan of leather, and as far as the stereo, I find myself turning it down so I can listen to the Renesis purr.

What a blast!!

Agreed. Getting a new 8 is like having a new baby, you deserve your own thread and you certainly don't want to steal another new members thunder.

Congrats to you both. I bought my new 8 in July (first new car and I'm 29), the first time I drove it off the lot I was in heaven. I had been looking to seriously buy the car for 4 years but I had to wait, and I'm glad I did.

There are some minor annoyance with car (as with any) and it requires a bit more attention than most, but it is all well worth it. The car is every bit as attractive as anything out of Italy and it drives like nothing else on the road. Be sure to check the premix and synthetic oil threads and always search before staring a new thread or asking a question.

Congrats on a great decision, you'll have the 'zoom-zoom' perma grin for quite some time.

OP- Having an 04 an getting a new engine is a blessing, you are a lucky man.
