Gouge?
Since we've heard from all the lucky guys paying MSRP on their 8s, I'm curious to hear from those who are not paying MSRP.
How many of you have gone to a dealer that is selling over MSRP? If so, how much and where?

oh yea! big ugly dealer problems..
I'm going to wait until the order deadline to post my new horror story so as to not "curse" myself.. haha. Just in case one of these dealers have a change of heart and decides to work a deal. I figure I give them that at least, before I crush their name and rep on the Net hahaha..

Even if they say they will sell to you at MSRP, becareful of the Extra's they might tack on, dealer prep, scotchguard, window etching, Paint protectant, and underbody rustproofing. Those are most of the things they try to hide in the final pricing of the vechicle. if you want to pay for those things that's fine, just make sure they perform a service instead of just tacking something on.

I hear ya.. for all the quotes I've been given thus far, all I've asked for is the plain Touring Package, no addons no nothing.. Which you would think translated to MSRP, but boy was I wrong...
Stay tuned for the weekend, I'll show you some real gouging that I experienced! Hahah

I hope you let Mazda know about how the dealers are treating you in Hawaii. Last I checked, Hawaii was still the 50th state in the United States of America, not the "People's Republic of Hawaii" ("People's Republic" ideology must be a West Coast / Pacific thing....since California was the original...and there are even dealers in California willing to deal from what others have said ). If they are going to treat you different just because they are on an island they are truely jerks with no character or enthusiast spirit, two things Mazda is trying to push hard to convey to the public again.
Please remeber that price fixing is illegal so if all three dealers are giving you the same song and dance they could be in trouble in more ways than one! Report them!
Again, emphasize to them that you can print out an extensive list of people that are getting an MSRP + tax + tax deal (no dealer fees and no dealer add-ons) and that you would like to be able to include them in that list and recommend them on the forums to other RX-8 enthusiasts.
I really hope they are reading these posts because they should be trying to make a long term customer rather than trying to make a killing on a few sales.
Definitely let us know what happens!

Well as you may have read in my other posts.. I was quoted some ridiculous pricing on the RX-8. (Plain ol' Touring Package, no Nav)
1) $39,995
2) $33,600
3) "We can't give you a price on this car, it's too early"
Apparently they all say the cost of doing business in Hawaii is high which is why we need jack up the price of the car. Yah yah.. I know it's more expensive to do business in Hawaii, but marking up one car so high is just plain greedy.
From all the invoice sites I've seen the actual supposed dealer invoice price is something like $27,502 for the Touring with $29,900 at MSRP. That brings profit from anywhere up to $2400. Dont you all think that's reasonable?? I mean, how much do these guys want to make off the car?? SHEESH.
There is a tiny piece of me that could swallow a $30,900, or maybe even $31,900 price.. thereby giving these hogs a $3-4000 margin.. anything more is just plain F$#%^G grubby.
As it stands I'm trying to find an Oregon dealer or Washington dealer that would work with me to get me a car at MSRP and ship it down here. Given the time restraint, I doubt that will happen.
What I really would love to do is drive that RX-8 to each dealer and tell em, LOOKIT THIS PUPPY.. BOUGHT AT MSRP... FROM NONE OF YOU! Hahaha..
Thank you for hearing my rant.

Hi RX-Nut,
Which island are you on? Oahu? If the dealers don't come down, your best bet would be to buy one in Oregon and ship it back.
My dad did this about 20 years ago for one of his cars and saved a bunch of money because Oregon didn't have any sales tax. 4% doesn't sound like much but when you figure 4% of 30,000.00, it is probably quite a bit more than any shipping costs you would have to pay.
That being said, isn't there some sort of shipping strike that is happening now? I haven't kept up much with Hawaii news lately.
RX-8 no ka oi!

Yep, I tried contacting Oregon dealers, two of which said it was a no go. Apparently they would have to drop ship it to a local Mazda dealer which still in fact includes a fee.
Being so close to pre-order deadline it makes it even more difficult as they seem to hint that they've ordered their allotments.
So as luck would have it.. I'm pretty much shafted and wont be getting the car this year. Unless these dealers have excess to sit on, I doubt I'll be getting one for anything near MSRP.

I guess it probably would be pretty complicated for regular customers to do it. My dad worked for Ford Aerospace at the time and got some deals on slightly used Ford/Mercury cars. Since it was a special employee type deal, it was probably quite different than a regular customer trying to buy a car.
Good luck in finding your RX-8 soon RX-nut. At the worst, you'll just have to wait a bit longer for the price to come down which would give you more time to save money anyways (unless you have the money already).

As far as how sales tax works when you buy a car in a state other than where your going to register it goes. A dealership in one state cannot charge you taxes if you will be registering it in another state. If you want to include the taxes in the amount your financing, you can have them work up what taxes will be in the state your registering it in, have them add it to the price of the car, and have them cut you a check back for that amount. Or if say you were going to put down 7,000, and your taxes come to 2,000, just put down 5,000 and save the rest to pay your tax on it when you go to register it with the state. If Oregan has no sales tax on their vehicles, and you have an address you can register it under in Oregan, than you can bypass paying sales tax all together, but if not you will end up paying whatever new vehicle sales tax in Hawaii is.

Wish I could do that... oh wells.. Pre-order deadline is here and alas I haven't ordered my car. Would have loved to be driving that baby this year, but thanks to the wonderful dealers we have here, waaah, I be left out in the cold....
The real problem is, there are dozens of fools in Hawaii who will in fact probably pay 40k+ when the car does come in. A vast majority of them will be kids in, or just out of high school and Mommy/Daddy buys it for them. And that is exactly what the car dealers here live for..
Sad but true.. Yo dudes, think of me when you're revvin' that rotary in the summer eh.. I'll be at the beach dreaming..

you should try e-mailing rx8orders@mazdausa.com again. i sent them an email this morning regarding dealers and mentioned your plight to them and they wrote this in response:
"Please be advised that we deal individually with customers. If there is
a customer with a specific concern, then that customer needs to e-mail
us directly to address the issue. "
they might be willing to try to help you.
