griding noise when clutch is engaged
I heard this griding noise twice when I was about to shift from second to neutral. this happend when I just nudge the stick out of 2nd gear and it seem to be stucked half way b/w engaged and neutral. I heard this grinding noise(this happen even when the clutch was fully depressed). I hope I didn't just halved my transmission life. now, I avoid this ever happen again by actually pushing the stick out of gear. so tell me how bad is the damamage? and has anyone done the same thing?

I'm always glad I got the AT when I hear of all these clutch problems. The 197HP is more than enough for me plus I can't go to fast anyways (tickets). Good luck with fixing ur clutch.

Hey dont worry, try avoiding that as much as possible. It has happend to me 1s or 2s and the dealer said its not a big deal if you try keeping it to the minimum. DONT regret buying the car manual cuz i belive a sport car HAS TO BE MANUAL or als it wont be a sport car.

It's not a clutch problem. You have selected a position of the gears in the transmission that is not correct and the tips of the gears touched. Not a big deal if you don't do it all the time. Damage occurs when the noise is loud enough to really startle you as well as others around the car and you feel the vibration along with the grind - it's so intense it can hurt your hand on the shifter. It made the noise even with the clutch disengaged because it was in the transmission, which turns as long as the vehicle is moving. The clutch disconnects the transmission from the engine, not the wheels.
As far as thinking the auto is better/more reliable, there is much more to go wrong in an automatic than in a manual transmission. That they are reliable is a tribute to modern manufacturing, not lack of problem possiblilites.

i had this problem too, then after about 18k miles the tranny started making noises, a bearing inside was cracked. they rebuilt the tranny and i never had a problem with the gears again. i asked mazda if i messed it up because i wanted to make sure i wouldnt have the problem again, and they told me no, it was probably not perfect from the factory.

:D :D RX8sick, until you expirience the manual you not gonna know what you missing, you become on with the car and you can feel any vibration any lil thing and you got full control of everything, no gear lag no nothing. sorry to hear that about your car man ill say take it in quick before they blame it on you abusing the car.
