Ha ha, I'm stupid

Let me set this up. I got my car a week ago yesterday (11/20). I've been driving it insane amounts of time (like whenever I'm not doing anything else I'll just drive around. I really haven't driven a car this much since I first got my license 9 years ago........ holy **** that just made me feel old). 1 week --> silly miles --> silly gas usage and fun as hell.

Anyway, so as usual I'm driving around showing my new baby to anybody and everybody that I know (hell I think I'm showing it to strangers now). I'm driving it over to my cousin to give him a ride and I notice a clicking noise when I shift down into 2nd and even more so when shifting into 4th. If I wiggle in neutral, as I do, I can occasionally hear the click but not always. WHAT THE **** IS THIS! Nothing big, but annoying and now I have to go get it looked at. I've been driving it hard, but ****, how have I already broken something. Is it possible to shift too hard?

** I was going to finish the story here, but I want to see if you guys can diagnose the problem first. I already told you I'm stupid so you can assume it nothing serious. So come on.... what's wrong with my car? What's this stupid clicking noise. I'm about to go eat dinner, so I'll post the answer when I get back in a bit. Oh yea, as a hint, remember I'm the moron.

well I know when you shift without the clutch it grinds...i've accidentally left my e-brake on for about 1/2 mile when I was driving (put it down...but not all the way) and there was a SLIGHT clicking. I'm just naming stuff that I can think of thats stupid.

Dear stupid!

Just kidding, I'd like to know a little more about where the clicking is emanating from... transmission, dash, engine, center console? Can you be a little more specific? Does it sound electronic or mechanical? Is it a crisp click or a muffled click?

I remember one time I was driving and while shifting I heard a click and it was the button on my sleeve of my button up shirt near my wrist. You know, where you put cuff links. It freaked me out for a few seconds until I realized it was the shirt button vibrating on the silver ring around the shift boot.

Ha! Nice! Ok, a lot of you were pretty close, but first place is definately going to LostAngel with Leprechans (****, I never even thought of that).

Ok, here's the rest of the story.

Since the clicking is nothing big I head on over to show my cousin the car. He likes to work on cars so he was really stoked over seeing the engine. We look it all over on the outside and he's impressed as hell (but who isn't right). So we jump in the car and I show him what 9k rpms is like. Then I'm like, hey dude check out this clicking sound and I proceed to show him what's going on. Down to 2nd (click!), down to 4th (click!).... what the **** is this.

He's like maybe there's something loose in the shifter..... hold on, do it again man. So I downshift to 4th (click!). He laughs and grabs my sleeve.

Wait for it.... wait for it.........

I had the cuffs unbuttoned on my shirt. The damn button on my shirt was clicking the center console when I shifted into 2nd or 4th. I've never been so happy to be a moron in my life (at least nothing was wrong with the car). And at least it was my cousin who noticed....

Go on, you can laugh at me too. God knows I laughed at myself.

BTW: I'm out of town for work this week so I'm starting to get the shakes now. I think its from not driving the 8 all day (only four more days to go). Then again, it could be those damn Leprachans again......

Dont feel that bad I had a noice that always drove me crazy and it was only when someone sat in the passneger seat, come to find out that the seat belt was clicking when snapped in because no one was ever big enought to make the lap belt tight.

I was going to guess that it was your teeth chattering, but don't feel too bad. I had a rattle the other day that was driving me nuts. Tried re-arranging the stuff in the glove box, etc. Wiggled this, pounded on that, couldn't re-produce the rattle. Finally, grabbed the garage door opener clipped to the visor - that was it!

At least you didn't trap yourself in your 8 like one member did here...LOL, I'm still laughing at that!!!

Quickly...

He buckled the front seat seatbelt to the rear seatbelt buckle, doing this means you can't take it off so he tied himself into the car. His son had to call his wife to save him...lol

LOL!!!

Lol, good story... Something like this happened to me once. Turns out, the sound was just the shift boot sticking together and pulling apart after a certain passenger spilled a little pop on it (right in the middle of summer, so it was always really sticky). It was a really horrible sound, and took me a couple of days to figure out what it was.
