Unhappy Hard Choices

I bought my Winning Blue RX8 this Sept and currently it has about 2800 miles on it. However, I will be going to Afganistan early next year and won't be back until 07. Since my 8 is still quite new, will it be better just to sell it now and buy another one when I got back, or put it in a crate somewhere? And does anyone know will Mazda continue the RX8 line into 07, or will they have other plans for our beloved rotorary engine? Thanks.

the rotary will never die again... this car will still be in production till at least 08 i believe so you dont have to worry about that.

Don't know what to tell you about the car. But thanks for serving our country. I appreciate it more than I can explain in words!

If you have a decent place to put it up for a year I would recommend doing that. As long as you prepare it properly, it will be as good as new when you return. If you sell it this soon, you will probably take a financial beating. On the other hand, the car will depreciate in the year that it sits and if for some reason you decide to sell it when you return, you will lose that year of depreciation anyway. Tough call, but it may boil down to whether or not you want to spend a year in Afghanistan worrying about this car or dreaming of getting a new '07 when you return.

Hard to say if the RX-8 in it's current form will be offered in '07. My guess would be yes, but I'm sure Mazda will be looking at the trend in sales and make that decision on an annual basis. If you tend to be a positive-thinking person, you could hope for more options by then with an FI or Mazdaspeed version or perhaps even a soft top (somewhat likely) or even a new RX-7 (somewhat unlikely). In any case, I suspect the rotary engine will be offered in Mazda vehicles for the foreseeable future given it's contribution to their image as an "out there" company.

So be safe during your tour and know that most Americans sincerely appreciate your sacrifice!

^like he said...GOD BLESS you and thanks for your service to this nation!!!

I say, keep yours...think of it. You will be back in 2007 with a 2005 RX8 with only 2.8K miles, WOW!

Just make sure someone takes it for a spin every now and then, maybe someone at the RX8 club you trust (since they know the car) can help you out.

the rotary never died, they made them in Japan up till midway thru 2002, then in 2003 came out wit the RX8, they just stoped bringing them into america in 05 (03/04 for large numbers).

Its sad to, cause we missed some of the greatest parts of the FD! SpiritR I love you!!!!

Anyway, I would keep it, its only 2 years, youd have a low miliage car, store it and have someone keep an eye on it....you could always sell it later and make money off the fact that its got such low miles.

I'd go for the 2007 just because it will be a nice treat coming home. But mechanically I think you can store it for a year without any serious problems. There are threads on how to prepare for long-term storage.

Thank you for all of your support! What I really need is some solid numbers in turns of how big of a hit it will be if I sell it. My 8 has the touring pack, plus the spare tire, wing, MP3 CD, and the MD player. I paid close to 34K when it's new.

Ouch, 34K to buy? Keep it for the year, you would take a big hit selling it now. Check out the private seller price in your area on kelly blue book, and that is if you can find a buyer. Oh, be safe and kick butt over there!!!

Ballpark number? Figure on getting $24K to $28K USD, depending on how you sell the car and who you sell it to. Probably even less if you sell it to a dealer. Just my opinion. Check some of the on line car sites like Edmunds or Kelly Blue Book for their numbers.

I bought mine on leave from Iraq in Febuary,03 but on return to Iraq my brother let me use his garage for storage....I didnt want to sell it for the fact I might not get out of the deal breaking even. I know I'm not helping in your situation, but for me it was the love for the car that made my mind (monthly notes don't stop while away) The only thing I can tell you is while away I did have someone to start it from time to time,(and wished I'd put it up on blocks so the tires were off the ground, but anyways,if you do decide to keep it,get someone to put a slow trickle charger on the battery for a day or two, once a month, because the electronics of the car continually and slowly drains the battery over time....My brother found this out when he didn't crank it over for a couple of months...good luck on whatever you decide.................................oh heres my late Halloween costume

i would say keep it, especially if your interest rate is more than 6%, as being deployed, your bank has to lower your interest rate to 6%, so you will probably make out big time. you will most likely take a big hit on selling it now, whereas if you keep it, you will have an 04 or 05, you didnt specify which year, with only 2.8k miles, so the value of the car will be significantly higher than other cars, even ones in comparable condition.
