Hard-top convertible?????

I don't know if Mazda plans on doing this or if there already is a plain convertible or anything but I absolutely love the Mazda rx-8's and I definately think they should come up with an Rx-8 Hard-top convertible like the Lexus s430 or the slk mercedes I think the Rx-8 would then definately be the Hottest car in the world I would get it over a ferrari or maybach even agree???

Mazda Rx-8 Hard-Top convertible!

Ummmm, NO. I would never buy an 8 over a ferrari given the means for both. Though, a hard top convertible 8 would be pretty stylin, I can't see it happening from an structural standpoint.

The performance would suffer greatly tho due to the added weight.

The viper R/T 10's are hardtop converts. They come stock with not top and it's an option to buy the hardtop for it. It's something like $300 for the top. The back window just doesn't fold down. But technically still a hardtop convert. Which ever way you look at it.

hard top convert. like the SC's would add about 400lbs (if you include all the chassis bracing that would be required to get a one star side impact rating). no thanks

Police, he's talking about the retractable hard top in lieu of the hard top that you must manually remove. You know, the ones where you push a button and twenty seconds later you're topless. The only problem would be the second set of seats. Maybe the Miata or the next RX... two seater could have this option. But that really doesn't go with Mazda's purpose built sportscar.

I thought that. Wasn't sure. If they were going to go convert. it would make more sense to do a manual convert. Not retractable. Like you said there would be no backseat. Besides the whole car would look ugly.

I guess I'm getting old...can anyone else understand this?

Using actual words, and sentences are good things.

Not for arguments sake, but how old are you? My 17 year old sister talks like that with instant messenger, and just wondering if she's going to grow out of it, and start acting like she actually passed her English classes.

As far as the original question, I'm have a hard time visualizing it, but to be honest I'd love to have a convertible.

Grow up or go away. Telling people to stay on topic and then calling them an *** is no way to end the ridiculous name calling. Now, the true test is going to be....will you respond by calling me names as well, or can we keep this civilized. When you start being antagonistic, don't be suprised when others respond in kind.

Though a convertable would be nice, that's what the Miata is for. The lack of a B-pillar in the 8 would make it extremely difficult to chop the top off and maintain any sort of its sports car abilities. The required chassis supporting add ons would make it relatively heavy.

:D :D :D

Just as I suspected. You failed the test. I'm an idiot for mis-spelling a word, huh? If poor spelling makes someone and idiot, what does bad grammar make them?

Sure, they can make any adjustments "need" for a convertible. But who wants a 240hp 3400 pound "sports car?" You won't find many here that do.

Most people are in this club because they love the RX8 as it is. The people that actually own '8s have bought them because of its great handling capabilities and amazing feedback. Most people don't love a car just for its name; they love it for the way it performs and "speaks" to them. Adding 400lbs+ to the car and sacrificing its chassis' rigidity would go a long way toward ruining the best parts of the RX8, which is why many people would rather the '8 stay a hard top. A convertible RX8 would be cool, but the worse gas mileage, acceleration, and handling dynamics would make a lot of people think twice about buying the 'vert just for its cool factor.

Not all people are 'drop top people' Coupes typically handle better and are faster than their convertible counterparts. The RX8 handling and acceleration would suffer greatly. I say leave the convertible business to the Miata or next gen RX7 as an option. And to answer your question--if the 8 weighed 3400lbs--no I wouldn't buy it--it would not be true to the rotary heritage of low weight and good handling. I'd get a 350Z or G35 Coupe if I wanted a heavy Coupe. The RX8 does not have enough power to weigh 3400 lbs and still be a decent sports car--it'd be like driving a Celica with that kind of power to weight ratio.

Even assuming that the RX-8 is 238hp at the crank (which I don't), adding another 400 pounds, and almost certainly subtracting body stiffness, would destroy much of what is special about the RX-8, and add many thousands of dollars to the cost. People buy this car because of the unique combination of engine, reasonable power and handling, looks, and price. Reduce the effective power and handling, and increase the price, and you likely would be the only customer.

He wouldn't be the only customer--you'd probably get a few poseur Hollywoodesque boulevard cruisers. The car would go the way of the Dodo and Thunderbird faster than you could make that $46,000 check out.
