Keyless Keeloq Systems been Hacked??

Ran across this interesting article about the keyless entry systems that most manufacturers use. ............. Interesting Read.

Great.

Now I'm going to be waking up in the middle of the night to go check if my car is still there.

The point I got from reading the whole thing is that these jerks are advertising that they've found a way to do it. Now the car thieves, will have a general idea how to get the job done. And with the www information in israel or whatever Nation, is easily accessable here in the USA.

I think it would be very expensive to buy the stuff needed to do it though. Way more expensive than what any average car theif would want to pay.

Besides, if someone really wants your car, no matter what you do, they'll get it. Just make sure you have insurance!

Even if it's really expensive, car thieves will still benefit from it. Let's say hypothetically that the equipment costs $10k; car is $30k. Of course, the thieves won't be able to sell the car because the VIN is reported stolen and they don't have the pink slip to it so they bring it to a chop shop and they'll be able to salvage about $15k out of it selling the parts on ebay or something. Thieves do this to motorcycles all the time, they're easy targets (get two to three guys to lift and throw it into the back of their truck and run away), motorcycles are also really easy to disassemble and sell.

First off, this thread title is misleading. This has nothing to do with the advanced keyless system -- it has to do with all remote lock/unlock systems.

Here's an idea -- don't lock your car with the key fob. Then there's no signal to intercept. If you only use the keyfob to unlock your car then unless someone follows you after cracking the code, you're fine.

Also, the line about convincing an insurance company that this is what happened makes no sense. If your car is stolen you don't call the insurance company and say "this is how they stole my car". You say "my car was stolen" and you likely never find out how it was stolen.

While your point is valid, Renesis, think about it this way:

- Paying off a sleazy employee at Mazda dealership that could make you a new key from your VIN # surely wouldn't cost $10K. Someone desperate for cash could probably be found to do it for less than $1K

- A gun and some ammunition costs less than $500. These can be used to take the car from you in a very easy way. It's a little more "hands on", but it happens every day.

- Someone with a tow truck could haul away your car and it cost them nothing but fuel for their truck.

As I've mentioned before, if someone really wants your car, they're gonna take it......no matter what you do. I understand that you are concerned about that info being released, but in reality there are much more easier and cheaper ways to steal our cars.

I thought that I had read in another article (can't find it now) that Mazda was not on their list of companies that used this particular system.

Very True!!!! ................. Correcting it ASAP

This article only applies to Keeloq based encryption. And the AKS used by Mazda is a combination RF based system.
