Related, is there any benefit to a periodic injector cleaner gas additive?

Hmmmm... Then again, I 'think' I lost some power during the 100 degF+ days of early August.
I would not use ANY such additives in this engine. Not worth the risk or benefit.

There are several threads saying it os good to use Fuel injector cleaner every now and then. I plan to use it once every 3000 miles.

Exactly why did you buy an RX-8 if you've only redlined it 2 times in nearly 5k miles? Go trade it in for a Yaris.

I agree with Ike. This car doesn't have a 9k redline for nothing. Why own a car like this if you don't want to enjoy it and push it to its limits every so often? But I can also understand where this guy and others are coming from. A lot of people "baby" their cars because they believe that engines last longer if you go easy on them. Also, driving hard uses more gas, wastes more tire tread, increases the chance of getting a speeding ticket or into an accident, and causes other parts to wear faster. So it is economical to keep the car mellow. The Yaris is very economical.

With a rotary, you'd probably be getting your best power:distance covered ratio at high revs, so you might be using your gas more effectively at high RPMs assuming you're not in bumper to bumper traffic.

I would hardly consider driving multiple times a day over 4000 rpms driving like a madman (unless you consider over 4k = 9k), but it doesn't seem to matter how I drive it, I consistently get 20 mpg. Sorry about your bad luck.

Does anyone ever wonder if those 10-14 mpg people have more power than those of us that get ~20?

no,

they drive in traffic all the time... and because of that they have less power...

No no, I was talking about the rev-limiter. You know when you rev past 9500k RPMs and the car cuts power to the engine? Feels almost like you accidently tapped the brakes.

Oh and don't redline too much. I just filled up and got 13.1mpg for the previous tank.

If the engine cuts power then you're probably into the fuel cutoff which is BAD. Just shift at 9000 or less and you'll be fine. And Jesus, I've heard of people getting 13 mpg at TRACK days. I get a consistent 19-20 combined even with the occasional redline.

Last tank was 14.5 mpg but then I'm past break-in and ran the hell out of it.

That's exactly what I got for babying the car. When I rev it high a lot that's the weeks I end up with 17 mpg (not that that's particularly great or anything). And the reason I specifically mention over 4000 RPMs is because of everybody's mindset of keeping the car under 3750 to prevent those secondary fuel injectors from coming online. And while running to 4000 RPMs is nothing to the rotary, cars around you are certainly going to think you're driving like a madman because they're all zombified to the sound of automatics shifting at 3000 RPMs.
