Head room

I am considering this car for a summer purchase, and sat in it for the first time at the Detroit Auto Show. For those of you who didn't make it to the show, they had an awesome cranberry-like red metallic color - was simply beautiful. I have lurked here over the last month or so and have read the posts about head room concern.

I am only 6'1, but my hair was noticably scraping the roof (I don't have tall spiky hair either). When I sat up a straighter, my head grazed. In the posts I have read regarding head room there has been mention that there is more room without the sunroof (this one had a sun roof). How much extra room does this give you? Is there any rumor that the '06 will have more room?

Obviously I will go to a dealer when the snow melts and see for myself, but was wondering what you guys have to say about it. I don't consider 6'1 that tall - it is too bad they couldn't give a little more room.

I'm 6'2" and I have no problems. And I have the sunroof. Play with the seat adjustments and you will be fine. I have never had a more comfortable car.

Moc247, the driver seat is height adjustable on sunroof models. Hopefully you will find a setting that suits you... because the car will not disappoint!

Actually, the seat in the base interior is also height adjustable. It adjusts to a broad range of heights.

You might also take note to how vertical you have to sit to be comfortable. It shouldn't be a problem for someone at your height, but everyone has their own tolerances/opinions. (not to mention leg lengths...)

Our RX-8 has a sunroof, and I don't fit very well. I'm 6'2"; my head grazes the ceiling, with the seat all the way down. It's not a problem for normal driving, but it prevents me from driving the RX-8 in autocross or on the track, since I absolutely don't fit with a helmet.

You'll have to do a real drive in one; do keep in mind that if you ever want to do a driving school, autocross or lapping, you'll have to add a couple of inches for helmet room.

The difference in headroom between moonroof / no moonroof, if I recall correctly, is 1 1/2 inches.

Myself I had no problems while wearing a helmet since I'm 5'7", my friend on the other hand was hating life with a helmet on since he's 6'1". Normal driving he had to lower the seat down and was still brushing against the ceiling sometimes. In the end he found a good compromise of reclining the seat back and lowering the seat down all the way. For normal driving its doable but for auto crossing or any type of track situations that require a helmet it can get a little tight.

I'm 6' 6" tall and exactly because of the headroom issue I got myself a sport package-equipped car (no sunroof).
I have no problems, and since then I added leather that I wanted and upgraded the stereo (which is much easier with the base system as opposed to the Bose). Othewise, the sport package gave me everything that I really needed, without unnecessary options and extra cost.

The model without sunroof does give a couple of extra inches of headroom.

I'm 6' and I can't fit comfortably in the 8 with a helmet on if it has a sunroof.

I'm looking for one without the sunroof.

I'm only 6' but I drive a Maxima as well as the RX-8 and I find the 8 has as much room as the Maxima.

You'll be fine. I am 6'00" and have ZERO issues. And that's even with the sunroof. I would also ask....why wait until summer? You can steal an '04 8 these days for next to nothing!! Maybe you should reconsider your purchase date. I have heard deals of up to $4k below invoice for an '04.

Good luck!!

I live in Michigan - we have a TON of snow on the ground. Buying now would be trouble . . .

Yes, that's the one. One of the best looking cars I've seen in person. No picture can do it justice.

Just in case anyone is interested, I am also considering an '05 GTO. Totally different types of cars I know, but it is looking like those are the final 2 in the running. With my GM discount and loyalty, the GTO would be a bit cheaper.

Oohhh!! Tough choice. I do like the look of the '05 GTO. The reviews I read on the GTO are great.

Nice...

Good luck!!
