Heat in the cabin
Hey guys - I just bought mine... 2005 Shinka and I'm wondering if this is a systemic problem, or if I just have issues. I drive an hour in the morning to work, park the car in a parking deck, then get back to it 3-4 hours later only to find that it's uber-hot in the cabin. Inside temp is WAY hotter than outside temp... then when I'm driving, even though it's 70F outside, it's hotter than hades in my 8... is this a systemic problem? Does anyone else experience this? I'm guessing it's because of the design of the vehicle, but... even with the fan/air OFF it still blows hot air at me when I drive...

Bummed, but bring on OU!
Put it on recirc. and the hot air will stop. As for cabin heat, I leave the sunroof on tilt when I park. Even in torrential downpours, no water gets in. Helps alot. Tinted windows would help too, but I've been meaning to do them for 40K miles now and never seem to get around to it. Just wait till you take a long drive and the transmission tunnel starts warming up :D

been there... had a nice cold Coke sitting in the drink holder (crappy place for it, btw) and by the time I got to my destination an hour later, the drink was actually HOT. Heh... this should come in handy in the winter I guess?
It still slays me that it's hotter INSIDE my car than OUTSIDE.

I had a rotary car before (93 RX-7) so I'm not surprise with people reporting higher than usual temp in the cabin, weak a/c, and other thermal issues. That's why its a blast (no pun intended) doing mods with this car because you are not limited to engine/exhaust mods. You can wrap the a/c lines, insulate the cupholders, etc. :D

oh, and i thought insides of cars always got hotter than outside...little green houses they are. thats why even on 80F days, the insides of cars can reach over 120F in a little over an hour of sitting outside (in a parking deck is a different matter )
oh, also try putting your drinks in the rear cup holders. those don't seem to be as effected by the heat soak from the exhaust. has the added benefit of not being in the way of shifting too :D

Yup.. not restricted to the 8. I used to have an Rx-7 while I was stationed in Maxwell AFB, AL and Biloxi AFB, MS.. both places get hottern'ell.... Maxwell being worse.. on a 90F day, cabin temp would be about 120-130F. That's *after* the car being parked for 9 hours! It was a black car, so that made it worse.
The Miata i had was white, interior temps in the sun were slightly less.
I can say this with confidence, though -- the Shinka I drive now has less "heat bleed" from the drivetrain than the '84 Rx-7 or the '94 Miata. In those two, the heat coming from the firewall and transmission tunnel was somethin' else.
The 8, in comparison, is much better insulated. There's still a little bit of heat coming through, but not nearly as much as my two previous mazda sportscars.
The shinka's almost black, remember.. black aborbs everything and probably makes for the worse 'sunstroke' of all colors.
Don't belive me? Wear a black shirt in August. :D

Danke. Thanks for all the quick replies - and good answers. Looks like I'll just learn to live - it is far outweighed by the beauty and fun-to-drive factor of the car...

actually, i can confirm that, even when your car is parked in the shade (or in my case, in a completely enclosed basement parking garage), the radiant heat from the center tunnel STILL makes the car warmer inside than outside!!!
hey, that just means come fall/winter you'll never be cold :D

in the winter i can literally feel the heat from the console comming into the cabin yes it runs much hotter then everything i've driven.. I even had a COLD bottle of water in the cup holder. Well after a few hrs of driving it was so hot I could have made tea small price to pay for such a great car!
