Help. Rust on the rear wheel tires.

Hello everyone. I brought my RX-8 when it first came out and now there's rust on the rear wheel tires. And when I brake, there's a screeching sound. I paid extra for the rust proof coating, but what's going on? Why is there a screeching sound and why is there rust on the rear wheels only after 2 years? I thought the rust proof coating prevents rust? Should I contact Mazda or the dealership? I've never seen rust on a 2 year old car. I'm pretty sure the extended warranty I brought is gone. Thanks for any help.

I think that rust proof coatng was BS by Mazda. I also think you mean the rust is on the inside hubs of you rrims. What you need to do if you do it yourself would be to get all the rust off using a powered, or manual, powered is much easier though, wire brush drill type thing and then paint over the areas that rust. But be careful to NOT paint the rotors or anything other than the rusted areas.

the rust is on the tires or the rotors?? rust on the brake rotors is quite normal on most cars, old and new, they are merely iron. the rust proof "coating" is most likely the paint on the car.

Your tires are rusting?!? You were supposed to replace them long before they wore down to the steel reinforcement belt. ![Lol2](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/lol2.gif)
Oh, and how is your car only 2 years old if you bought it when they first came out? July/August '03 + 2 years = October '07? How many miles do you have?

First off, you were a moron to believe in the *Rust coasting* from dealership.
Second, No way Tires will *rust*, the only *possible* reason I can came up is that, those are not rust, its BRAKE DUST ! which is brown, and it looks like rust.
Third .... Mr. First post you might want to put a picture up.

First, rust protection is nothing more then a money scam, does nothing. Rust protection was a big market before cars started to use galvanized metal, now it is no longer an issue.
Second, your wheels are not rusting, they are a non-ferrous metal alloy which dose not rust as steel does. In all likelihood you are seeing the break rotor rusting, this is normal and unpreventable. You can pull the rotors and clean them then repaint them but this will need to be done every other year. You will also need to us a paint that can with stand the heat of a break rotor.

I am still amazed at how little/none brake dust my '8 generates. The venting design is excellent. That and I use manual transmission compression braking much more than the brakes themselves, and keep a distance between myself and cars in front, adjusting my speed rather than braking. My daughter's auto trans Mazda6 puts out a lot of front wheel dust however as she brakes much more frequently - lesser experience thing.
As others have said, brake rotor flash rust is normal; I get it every time it hard rains or I wash the car. One hard braking thereafter and it's gone.
Some brake squeal from disc brakes is also normal. Ever since asbestos pads were outlawed it's been that way.
btw: I realize after the fact in your case, but there's no reason to have a "rust proofing" applied. That fad/rip off went out long ago. The non-rusting materials, coupled with factory dip galvanizing precludes any significant rusting.
