Both the GTI and the SI aren't far off the RX-8 performance wise as well. The RX-8 will handle better but the GTI and SI will handle plenty well for some spirited driving and they're pretty close in a straight line compared to the RX-8. In addition the SI should hold it's value VERY well, you can't even buy one right now without having to wait a few months.
Don't let the RX-8 zealots fool you into thinking the SI is anything but a fun, sporty, practical, reliable car at a good price.

I agree with Ike. Except beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the new Civic Si looks like ***. I probably could survive the bland exterior, but that new dash is a deal breaker. Add to it that I have had bad experiences with Honda cars... I'd get the GTI instead (easy mods, nicer interior, and reported to be a better daily driver).

I worked for a car dealership in CA for over 5 years, and spent some of that time as the assistant to the GM. I'd like to think I know a little bit about how the car business works. Two things I do know for certain... people who live in NY should not comment on the car business in CA, AND, people who would fly in to LA to buy an EVO and drive it home thousands of miles are COMPLETE IDIOTS! Last minute airfare (even on PriceLine.com) is expensive, and what about the cost of fuel and hotels? Wouldn't it be cheaper to simply beat up your local Mitsu dealer? Oh wait, perhaps the local dealer has added an ADDENDUM to the MSRP of the few EVOs in stock, and won't negotiate? Naw, that would never happen... Not ever. What do I know... I only live about 2,000 miles CLOSER than you do to LA, right?

Lancer Evolutions are a top-of-the-line "halo" model for Mitsubishi. It's what 18 year-olds lust for when they're not oogling cheerleaders. The problem is that styling doesn't jive with the sensibilities of people who can actually AFFORD one. Hence, dealers ASK more for the few they do sell AND, simultaneously, Mitsu isn't selling many nationwide. Mitsubishi's BEST EVO month was August 2005, when they delivered a whopping 617 EVOs in the US. Source: http://media.mitsubishicars.com/Rele...ITsales&page=1
Ergo, they are perceived as both "hot" and "cold" at the same time. Are you beginning to see the total picture now?
BTW- the new FWD Eclipse is outselling the "faster" EVO by at least 4 to 1 right now. Is it any wonder that the Japanese don't export their best models to the US, claiming that they just don't sell (Skyline, Silvia, the discontinued Supra, the old RX-7, etc)?

As for the people that are flying to get their car, there is something called miles, also 14 day notice makes a flight pretty cheap and if you're getting the car for 1000-2000 cheaper then it's worth it. There is no addendum at any dealer that actually thinks they're going to sell an Evo, the Southcoast prices are below invoice which other dealers in the country usually aren't willing to do... So yet again, you don't know what you're talking about.

Go try to buy a 2005 Evo right now, they barely exist, whereas '05 RX-8s that have been sitting on lots for several months are abundant.

1. Did I ever say they weren't limited production models? Mitsu makes 3 versions; how "limited" can they be? Milking the cash cow, they are, by selling "cheaper" versions.
2. From www.edmunds.com: MSRP of "typically-equipped WRX STi" $35,268. But what's the market price paid by CA consumers, you ask incredulously? $35,268. Cha-ching! Should I mention that price isn't close to "around 30k"? Should I mention their numbers are based on actual vehicle deliveries within CA? Still want to claim that the STi and Evo cost around $30k?
3.Did I in any way say anything which would indicate that we ALL didn't know that there are tons of 05 RX-8s to be had for a song? Why did you even bring that up?
4. Yup I want to spend a ton of money on other stuff so I can get "frequent flyer miles" so I can journey to LA to save diddly-squat on an bass-fugly Evo...
5. Didn't I say that other dealers around the country weren't willing to negotiate on EVOs? "There is no addendum..." and yet, somehow dealers manage to sell out of EVOs early each year? Look dude, if you seriously believe that a dealer sitting on one yellow or red EVO isn't going to charge a bit more for it, especially when they KNOW the next idiot in the door will PAY that much for it, then you haven't got a clue. The ONLY singular thing which MIGHT make 06 EVO IXs less desirable to potential buyers is the NEXT EVO, the "10". Do I even need to point out the laws of supply and demand? So Southcoast has a bunch, and they're firesaling them now to avoid having too many later. Big deal. When their HUGE allotment of the NEW EVO X arrives and they start telling folks that "Well, due to demand, we must sell these at MSRP", while other dealers are holding out for higher-than-MSRP prices for the few units they receive, they're still going to look like good guys to the EVO board members, yet they'll be raking in the dough.
6. I pointed out the Eclipse sales because, evidently, that's the only high point that Mitsu corporate can find to concentrate on in their declining-from-last-year's sales numbers. They go and redesign almost a 1/3rd of their entire model line, and no one gives a rat's behind. ALL of their corporate websites still point to "www.mitsubishicars.com", yet that website doesn't even work! 5th graders in the backwoods of MN know more about web design fundamentals, it would appear.
7. Did I say "secretary"? LOL At most dealers, I would have been called "Assistant GM" for the work I did.
8. Here's a trick question, Ike. If a car's MSRP is $36,299, and the destination charge is $605, by how much would Southcoast have to discount the Evo MR to sell it "around 30k"? Source: http://media.mitsubishicars.com/deta...59664&mime=ASC Don't think to hard about that, Ike. I wouldn't want you to hurt yourself.
9. Oh, and a check here (http://media.mitsubishicars.com/deta...74774&mime=ASC) shows the Evo MR MSRP was set by Mitsu corporate at just $35,189 plus the $605 destination fee. That extra $1,110 you quoted was from where, exactly? The car's extensive option list? Again, according to www.edmunds.com, that $1,110 represents Mitsu charging for two packages their website claims are "standard equipment" on the MR. Soooooooo, the "true" MSRP of an Evo MR is, you guessed it, $36,924, including the destination charge. What are CA consumers paying, in spite of Southcoast's claim of "below-invoice" prices? Hmmmm, Edmunds says $36,099! Wow, almost $900 off retail price. Ooooo, such a bargain. Also, that's very close to "around 30k", isn't it? Count me in the underwhelmed majority who feel Ike is wrong on this one.
10. Your obvious command of spelling and grammer is ***-tounding! "Assanine", how funny, and yet, at the same time, so very sad. "There is something called miles..." might have been grammatically-correct if you had inserted (in quotations, of course) "frequent-flyer miles" in place of just "miles". We'll totally ignore the rest of that run-on sentence. Perhaps we should also ignore the next, completely incorrect statement containing two entirely separate thoughts. Grade: C- Could I suggest the stringent use of the "EDIT" button, should you wish to make more credible posts? Boy, I wasn't the smartest fellow in my class, but you do make me look like a genius.
Again, I'm not attacking the EVO, as it's a wicked little machine with butt-fugly styling. That's not the machine's fault. Nor am I attacking Mitsu, for they build very competent off-road vehicles. It appears that Ike's experience with Mitsu dealers has only been, we assume, "pleasant" as he apparently has bent them over the sales desk and shoved their "suggested retail pricing" so far up their collective asses that it's possible to read the figures on the Maroni when they open their mouths to complain. Ike, feel free to ask, if you need an explanation of what a "Maroni" is. Just please, don't ask me. I'm too tired of your drivel. I can see why you're up to 5,300 posts. Are you paid extra for useless information, or is it more of a lifelong goal of yours to befuddle and bemuse those of us who are merely trying to voice an opinion?

I drove it again this weekend. Things that annoyed me: drive by wire at low engine speeds, and the camber thrust. Fun little car.

I'll also assume that "motons" was intentionally misspelled.

There you go. In one paragraph, I nullify your entire argument.
