HELP! RX-8 Water Damage!
Hello all, I am going to tell you the story about my car and why it is not running properly and I would like replies regarding your opinions of what is damaged and what you would recommend doing to fix. Ok, so here's some info on the car first, 04' maroon/black GT package 6 speed manual RX-8 of course with 70k original miles and here are the few mods done to it, full 3" stainless steel dual resonated agency power exhausts, aem cold air intake, msd 8mm wires, drilled/slotted rotors all around with hawk ceramic pads. Ok, so now you know the basics, here is the story. So I was driving to Hastings to return a movie on a very rainy day, all was fine until I drive thru an intersection that had a large/deep puddle of water and it was so bad that I couldn't see out any of my windows from the cars beside me splashing water all over my car an once I got thru the puddle an being badly splashed the car died out. I tried starting it 3-4 times then it started but started very strange, it was VERY loud and sound like a lawn mower very choppy and didn't have hardly any power it would drive up with the pedal floored the rpms went up about 1rpm per 2 seconds or so and idled really low around 500rpms and also the traction light in the middle of the rpms came on the one that looks like a car sliding around and the DSC light was flashing. So I turned off the car because I thought driving it like that would only do more harm than good so I called a tow truck an the next day I took apart my intake and it had a lot of water in it so I cleaned it all off and cleaned the MAF sensor and dried the filter and pulled the plugs and jumped the relays to crank the engine without it on and it spit out water for a good 10 mins and then I dried off the plugs and put them back in and hoped for the best. It started up but still started up like last time very loud and choppy like a lawn mower and was smoking white smoke for a good 10 min which most likely from the water being burned up so I let it idle for 30min and then turned it off and turned it back on and no smoke but still wasn't running right so I called Mazda up and the next day I got the apt to bring it in. I didn't want to pay for the tow so I just drove it there with a friend of mine following behind me with both of our hazards on. So the next day they called and said it was hydro locked and I said I drive it here don't cars that are hydro locked not drive?? They said they would take off my intake manifold and get the water out from there. The next day they called and said they did a compression test and one rotor has low compression and the other no compression, they told me best thing to do would be buy another motor which they said is 5k without labor. I don't have 5k on me so I just drove it home and tried changing the plugs to my old plugs thinking maybe the ones in it were damaged from the water and it still started up wrong with the old plugs and that is where I am now. So if anyone thinks they might know the problem or how to fix it please let me know. I know buying the new motor is ideal (duh!) but I can't come up with the money anytime soon and I'm looking for any other methods or info, thanks for reading!!

This wouldn't be the first time that someone destroyed their engine by driving through "deep" water. (by "deep" I really mean "too deep for the engine to handle").
Mazda will NOT cover engine replacements under warranty for this type of damage, because they would be retarded to say "yes, you can drive this through deep water without issue!"
This damage IS typically covered by a comprehensive policy on car insurance plans. If you do not have a policy that covers this, then you are going to be footing the bill by yourself. If you do, call them up and file a claim.

Ok so I met a guy with an fd rx7 who told me he would rebuild my motor for $1,500.
My question is do you think a rebuild would get it running properly, or am I better off just buying a new motor from Mazda?

i recommend if you have full coverage to call ur insurance comp and ask about it. tell them you drove thru a flooded street. a lot of times they will pro-rate half the cost or more of a new engine. best of luck.

Timmy, it's been over 2 months since he cracked it, insurance claim was suggested and I guess was either denied or never followed up on.
But no, a rebuild with damage such as yours would mean buying all new pieces, which basically gets you a new motor, but will cost ~$3,500+ in parts. Since you have had coolant through the motor, I wouldn't re-use anything inside.

LOL!
That was awesome too
Haha, that's what I thought. How in the world is that guy going to do an engine rebuild with that kind of money?
