Helping out my Old Man...

[QUOTE=zoom44]I would think that guys in their 50s 60s and older would be more likely to check the oil not less. QUOTE]
That's an excellent point. I know I inherited my obsessive oil-checking behavior from my dad (65), even if my own previous cars never really consumed much oil. I guess now w/ the RX8, it'll start paying off....

Personally, i think your dad would be better off with the G35 Coupe... automatic.
Its a fun car, and easier to own. True at 66 he might be able to take care of the 8... but what about at 70 or 74?
Buying an 8... you have to understand what you're getting into. Owning a rotary asks a little more from its owners than a piston engine car... but it also gives a lot back in return.

If 2 minutes is too much for a person to take out of their day, even at 66 years old, then maybe you're right, the 8 isn't the car for you. Then again, maybe he can also skip things like brushing teeth and taking showers, since those take more time AND effort.

I gotta say, I think that this really demonstrates why if Mazda do wish to pursue more sales with Renesis powered cars, an oil reservoir for the metering system is the way to go.

Whoah..
Bringing this one back from the dead! Anyhoo, just to update you all, the Mazda dealer screwed him over, so he's looking at other options. As of now, he is still driving his Accord V6 Coupe...

I bought at a dealer 300 miles away. If you two get interested in the RX-8 again I strongly suggest you don't let yourselves be held hostage by one bad salesperson or one bad dealership - try the Purchasing, Insurance and Financing sub-forum and the Good-Guy/Bad-Guy sub-forum to get leads or background information on the dealers near (or less near) you. I'd be willing to recommend the dealership which sold to me and the particular salesman too - both were great (but both were in the Baltimore area and that may be way too far away).

Find another Mazda Dealer, a good one, even if you have to travel - get a late 05 or an 06. Our dealer had to drive it for an hour just to deliver it! Your dad will love the seats, the automatic stick makes this a joy, especially with bad legs, and the heater in the seat can be a real comfort.
Oil use is extreamly variable - if you drive real hard she will eat oil, if you are playing around between 40-60 she may only need about 1/2 quart per 1000 miles. It depends on the rotations you like to set at. If he can remember to put gas in the tank, he can remember to add oil to the front. Tunning is everything.
Mom, 94 drives this on the back roads (her vision is a little flakey so heavy traffic out of the question) and she loves it.
His biggest problem, besides replacing the tires, will be young punks who want to drag race so bad they almost cry when you wave them on by - he will have to resist the temptation. The other thing is letting the car run for a whileif you just move it a little to warm up the system, otherwise it gets too much oil and won't start - but if he has had other cars he will just feel that this is an Indy car some how embedded into a tight little Mazda. Get a jumper box for the battery because he will either forget to lock it until it honks and the inside light will be left on, or he will leave the back open, and run the battery down, but if this is his last automobile, than this is a fine finish. I would recommend a Blue - they are more visable and there is a superstition that these were some of their best...
Good luck

Thanks for all the help...I will be one of those "young punks" trying to race him...I have a Stage II Supercharged GTI VR6. He's got a lead foot on the gas AND the brake...So he'll be changing out tires and brake pads quicker than normal... :P I'll revisit the idea with him. There is another dealer about 20 miles north of his home...We'll see what happens...
Thanks again All!!

Update!
Got back from my Honeymoon this past Friday, and randomly asked if he got a new car. He did...Well, new to him. It has 4700 miles on it.
A 2005...RX-8!!!!! Auto in Alpine White. He LOVES the car...I mean LOOOVES it...He will be checking the oil every other gas fill up, so he says. Anything I need to make him aware of? Did the 2005s get more HP?

At his age, I'm sure he can take care of a car. It should have come with a nice little book about a Spanish guy named Manuel. It's a quick read and worth the time. He's got over 40,000 miles of warrenty ahead of him so I'd say no worries.
Perhaps you should invite him to join the forum. He's got the car, he'll want to talk about it, but the lousy, unwashed, non-owners just don't understand. He'll need access to us enthusiasts.

For Christmas you can buy him polish and car care stuff, and do get him to a car rally - he is going to have so much fun!!!

If your dad is used to driving a Vette then maybe this would not be an issue for him...Being one of the older owners in this forum, I had a lot of back pain for the first few weeks of owning my 8. I caught on after awhile that I was not used to such a low ride and was literally dropping into the seat the last few inches and that puts a lot of stress on the back...and, I found it is much better for me to enter the car by first sitting in the seat with my legs together outside the door...and then swinging them around. Sounds a little sissie-like, but doing that plus not dropping into the seat have eliminated my back pain.

Lew ... both of you should come to the Chicago BBQ this Saturday!!!
Talk about excellent timing to introduce him to the Chi-town rotary family!! Info is all here about our local Chicago meets.
If he signs up, be sure to tell him to PM me and I'll get him signed up for EVOLV-Chicago (the Chicago RX-8 club). We also have a local forum at www.chicagorotary.com
