revelation

This is a revelation,
I've been driving my beautiful rx8 for almost 5000 miles. I usually get 18 mpg. I broke 20 twice getting 21.3 and 20.7 driving on highway at 55-65mph. Super fast driving would yield 16-17mpg. But i tried something different today. I drove my car on highway in this range 75-85mph and I am getting excellent gas mileage. Cannot be for sure yet but after 70 miles my gauge hand dropped just about 3 dots instead of a quarter tank. Now I am at 250 and still have a quarter of tank... looks promising. Maybe they're right about that moment of inertia or whatever it is...
Thanks

These aberrations happen. My Expedition, which gets 12 mpg on average, has reached 20 mpg on highway drives when I have a tail wind. But, on the same highway, with no wind I get 17.5 mpg, and with a headwind, just 15 mpg.

There are too many unknown factors to judge. Polak mentioned rain. Maybe the car likes high humidity. I recall racing days in the 80's where we used water injectors. Maybe Polak read the wrong trip gauge (e.g. Trip B vs. Trip A). Maybe the gas nozzle shut off prematurely, as just 1 gallon short would mean 3 mpg less (28.19 which is still great). Maybe it was a non-stop trip which eliminates cold starts. Maybe Polak drove all down hill. Maybe, he had a great tail wind. Or, just maybe, it was a combination of factors, none of which were 100% true all the time, that created this aberration.

Good for you... PoLak.

Polak,
Something does not make sense. In order to drive in NJ you need to be 17. Maybe your confusing your age of 16 being your MPG.

I Just got my car last week so I haven't had a chance to measure accurately, though my first tankful, I got 250 miles in constant stop and go city traffic, not that much worse than my 2003 EXV6 Accord!

Come on Polak, you forgot to reset the trip meter after your previous journey didn't you? Which explains why you have got twice the mpg of everyone else in the US (and the UK too).

The only other possibilities are you were towed for half the distance, or there is one hell of a down hill section!

Cheers

Though not as horrible as most people tanks I have yet to approach the magical 31 I was on. First tank was a mix of city/highway got 22mpg. And last tank was traveling to the airport to pickup my sister. The Road (turnpike) and speeds were almost identical to last time, if not a little bit faster. Sadly I only got 24mpg, I do believe I got 31mpg but I doubt it will ever happen again

Edit: Just because im Polish, and 16. Doesn't mean I rely on hallucinates to feel happy (I have an 8 after all). As for alcohol thats a different story.

Uh the legal driving age in NJ is 17.

Hmmm i smell something tooo.

OK ... I get 20.5 MPG (UK that is) and I've hardly had a chance to welly the beast yet. That equates to 17.07 US MPG.

This 31 MPG stuff is a total load of BS

Actually I think Polak made an honest mistake. What occurred to me is that if he accidentally had the instrument cluster set to metric rather than English the trip odometer would read the kilometers traveled instead of the miles traveled. Instant 60% increase in the numbers if you don't know it happened. That would be 19 mpg instead of 31 mpg. That fits in with what most folks are reporting.

Guys, honestly I made no mistake honest or otherwise. Other then the pump cutting off early which is highly unlikely and I have no control over since NJ is full-service. Elara has gotten 28mpg going 85mph over a long distance as well 31 isn't so far away from that.

I'll be traveling another 100 miles on Christmas ill tank up then see how this tank turned out.

I filled up my very first tank at 201 mpg...just picked that number since it would be easy calculate mpg...actually tried to stop at 200 but gas station was a mile away.

I filled in 10.449 gallons which comes out to 19.24 mpg. I live in Hawaii so you can't go very fast here otherwise you'll fall of the land and fall into the ocean.

I've been short shifting and haven't revved the motor over 4000 rpms, usually shifting around 2500 except a few times where I needed a little more speed to get on the freeway.

I expected worse so I'm happy with 19 mpg

Hm, 31 mpg? No way. There's dozens of reviews on the web with people all reporting the usual 15 liters / 100 Km. I'm not saying you didn't see the boardcomputer report something, but 31 mpg is a mistake, weather it's calculations, boardcomputer or whatever. SImple logic applies

Btw: how does one get to be born in 1987 and own an rx8?

I know you have the new muffler bearing install kit plus you were using that new fuel from Italy!

No disrespect....just good fun!!!
I once thought I got 35 mpg in my Rover, but it was all that wine.

Kind regards,
Doug

Hard work? I got a high paid IT job that still doesn't allow me to go rx8 at 31 (esp. not with its fuel consumption ). I can't imagine any job nearby that would have given me 35'000 USD (what an rx-8 is about around here) at 18. Not even remotly, even if I'd give up all holidays etc. What the heck is your job? I guess I work in the wrong area. Can only guess you live with parents and have no costs of living/rent/insurance or won the lottery .. sigh.

This has been beaten to death. I make 600-800 a month Max, I have no expenses other than the car, and parents paid for everything else which allowed me to save for a year and 5 months put down 18k financing the rest.

Edit: I'm 16 who else would i live with!?

That'd explain it. How's financing in the US? Getting these car-maker supported interest rates through 'car-banks' or similar as I saw in germany .. 0.9% interest or even 0. Too bad this doesn't exist where I live :/

A bit more on topic, the rx8's a wonderful car, but the fuel usage gives me the creeps. It's on par with the worst consumption on most sport cars (apart from maybe extremes like ferraris etc). This is a real issue here, as we do not have the insanely low prices of fuel in the US, it's 3 times higher here.

Maybe I'll do something insane and still get one soon, anyway
