I have 3.9% not great not bad. $373 a month.

As far as Fuel goes people make it out to be more then it really is.
For example:

Let’s assume 2 cars with 2 drivers.
Both drivers drive the average of 10,000 miles a year.

Car A gets 22mpg
Car B gets 28mpg

In reality the difference between the 2 cars to maintain a year will be in the neighborhood of 300-400 dollars. Not that big of a deal if you buy the car that you really love. MPG is something imposed on people who lived during the 70's oil crisis IMHO.

PoLaK you're sounding too reasonable for a 16 year old LOL. Besides you were weren't even alive during the 70s oil crisis. I can still remember going to the gas station w/ my dad back then. Cars ending w/ even numbers can go one day, cars ending w/ odd numbers go another day.

Still better than any domestic or my import SUV that we also hold dear to our hearts and love here in the land of the free!!

Polak you do sound on top of your game for your age.

Kind regards,
Doug

Yea I still know it happened and as I said that it was my opinion, more like a hypothesis really.

Just thought I'd stick my nose in here.

I don't own an RX-8, but rotaries have always had wierd thing going on with speed and fuel consumption. The comment made earlier about inertia of engine internals is true (as i understand it). This is because of the fact that the rotating components in a rotary are the eccentric shaft and rotors, which have rotational and rotation+orbit movements, respectively. Compare this with a boinger which has a crank(rotational), con rods(linear+orbit), and pistons(linear). Additionally there's the valvetrain which has cams(rotational), lifters/pushrods(linear, OHV engines), rockers(tilting/oscillating, OHV and some OHC engines), and valves(linear), to list major components (and ignoring springs). None of the components of a rotary ever come to a complete stop, but the boingers have several components (rods, pistons, lifters/pushrods, rockers, valves) which during some point of the engine cycle (or at least a component of their movement) must come to a complete stop and reverse direction. This is what was meant by positive and negative inertia. Also, the drivetrain on a piston engine must be driven by the crank, which means there are also belts, chains or gears in the equation as well.

Basically, the losses in a rotary increase at a lesser rate with RPM than a boinger. There are also many other factors (of course), most notably ECU tuning. Which I suspect, (due to emissions tuning, last minute changes, new model etc....) is a little f***ed up. :D

There, I'm tired, ignore any dumb mistakes I made.

EDIT: Oh yeah, i was going to mention this but forgot. The 3rd gen RX-7 supposedly got 11mpg at 120mph in stock trim. What would a boinger be getting at that speed I suppose.....:D

Hey I3man....

What did you do if your plate ended in a letter? lol

I have to agree w/ pol about the MPG cost issue.

The bigger issue for me is convienience. (I probably spelled that wrong... I'm spell check dependant...) Gas is about 15-20 cents cheaper if I drive about 10-15 mins down I-287 than it is in town. Meaning, it irks me when I don't have time to buy gas out of town and know I'm throwing money away. For me, making a tank last longer means going and gasing up maybe every 4-6 days ('94 Integra) as opposed to 2-4. I have a feeling I'm going to have to gas up every 1.5-3 days in the 8 w/ my 1.5hr commute. (Thank God it's only when college is out....)

If my Civic could hit 120 mph I bet it would double that! It gets 35 mpg at an average speed of 80 mph.

legal driving age in NJ is 17? wow, so you got a rx-8 before you even got a license? lucky guy. It must suck not being able to drive the rx-8 on your own. But once you hit 17, you'll be able to really drive the car!

polak rocks!!

I don't think he actually owns the car.. you have to be 18 to title in your name, and the finance rate seems way too low for his age! I'll bet the parents ROCK and helped him out a lot!

So far, are you still seeing the same mileage? That's rocks! I used to get about 10 mpg, and with the descreening I'm hitting about 13 mpg now! Is it because of the descreening? Who knows, and who cares at this point. Drive it like you stole it and deal with paying for more gas

Syntrix, you do drive it like you stole it. 10 to 13 mpg? I'm aware of a racing outfit that is getting around 8 mpg and are working to improve that number. Mind you ,they are at 9 grand constantly. I'm assuming you are there whenever humanly possible (as the road conditions allow)

Good news, Polak. It was just a thought, but since you've done it twice now, all I can say is: "How can I do this?" You must be living right!

Oops, looks like my week for screw-ups. :-)
I thought you had named your RX-8 "Elara" and meant that you had done 28. My bad.

Let's just say that if there is a soft code counter for a DTC for rev limter exceeded. That code is definately stored in my ecu

I could try to get max fuel economy, but I would just go insane. This car is just way too much fun!!

Whoa there, before anyone else blames stuff on me- the best I got was just under 26mpg, and it was for only about half a tank.

I'm currently averaging around 17-18mpg, but then I've learned to drive this car like a bat out of hell.

My mileage just went down, I got 10 on this last tank. I need figure out a good place between no gas pedal and WOT

It can only be one of three things. He's full of crap, He's measuing his fuel wrong, or he's got a true one of a kind lean tuned rx8 that we all don't have. That's basically what it comes down to.

Zerobanger reported 30.22 mpg on a long distance hwy trip going 57 mph (slightly under 3000 rpm) on cruise control.

For more on evaluating these atypical data, please see my new mileage thread elsewhere in this same forum.

The data sets are way too scientific here

I will admit that I get in the 20's when I'm doing longer runs on the freeway in 6th gear. But running around town, hitting lights, pushing the car hard, etc... That's a recipie for poor fuel ecomomy.

FWIW, in my 03 1.8T GTi with a lot of mods, but stock turbo.... I got about 16 mpg. That doesn't mean much, except for a comparision on how I drive.

I had someone in the car with me. Cops aren't as bad as you think, i had one come over with his 8 to get some decals installed. Afterwards we went for a cruise on the highway and we both were up to about 100 at one point. He also had no problem with me going out for a curise with no licence. And he paid in PBA cards.
