Hi. This is my first thread and I have a few questions about rx8's

First off let me say hello to everyone in here. You guys have a very good forum going on and I appreciate the wealth of info i have gained from lurking and reading

Anyway, here are a few questions I have that i have heard from friends, and I was wondering if you guys could please advise me if they are wrong or not

1) your oil has to be changed twice as often as a normal piston driven engine

2) your car becomes unbareably hot because the engine sits so far back

3) the a/c sucks ( this might be true because my mazda 3 a/c really does suck )

4) gas becomes quite expensive

5) your insurance will bend you over and give it to you hard if you're not over the age of 30 ( i'm 25 btw ; so what are you all paying? No tix / accidents here)

6) the paint is cheap. it will flake and chip with any rocks / hard dirt that hits it. ( my mz3 paint is decent... although i dunno)

7) All dealers are marking up the brilliant black color ( is this true? I have searched in my area and it seems all blacks are much more expensive )

8) you're better off getting an s2000. handles better / better fuel economy ( although subjective, what puts the rx8 over the s2k in your opinion?)

Thank you all very much for your input and I look forward to becoming an active member of your community. Oh and if any of you surf offtopic.com , im one of the main forum mod's there ( juggernaut)

1. yes
2. hot but not because of that, higher egt's
3. yes
4. yes
5. insurance should go down at age 25 for males (unless you street race)
6. paint is ok, not that bad (alittle orange peel)
7. I have a black 8 and they're not marked up in TX
8. my opinion is RX8 is better over s2000

1). True, but simply adding oil will suffice
2). False
3). It's satisfactory
4). ?...it's a sports car, go with a Prius if you're worried about gas
5). Nope...4 doors, and the rotary counts as 2 cylinders, so I get low insurance rates
6). I wouldn't say cheap, it's just a light layer of paint. Unfortunately it's very vulnerable as you say.
7). Dunno
8). Depends what kind of car you're looking for. What puts the rx8 over the s2k is the practicality (i.e 4 seats, big trunk, etc). And of course, better looks.

1. True but I did this with every car I owned.
2. Keeps my hot coco warm.
3. Yup but its a sports car not a mini van
4. Oh yea Mazda says $1,400 a year. Kiss my a$$...
5. My car insurance is $159 a month no tix 1 accidents
6. Paint sucks. But I'm getting House Of Kolor.
7. Have not heard of that color being marked up but depends on where you live. Winning blue it the best color to get.
8. RX8 kicks s2000 a$$!

That is all...

1) No. Since a little is injected into the chambers to lubricate the apex seals, you loose it thru the exhaust. It's a very little, very controlled amount. So, occasionally, you will notice during your routine oil level check that you can add a little to top it up back to max on the stick. Your oil change interval is about the same as any other car.

2) No. I live in the SE where it gets hot and humid a little. This issue is a non.

3) It's marginal, to say it sucks is taking it a bit too far. But, that's coming from a person who can bear living in the SE.

4) 18 mpg, 93 octane (supreme or premium). You figure if that's quite expensive. Again, it depends on what you've been used to feeding.

5) Not true. At first, the 1.3 litre displacement firure really had the insurance companies fooled. They've kind of caught-on though. Still not too bad imo.

6) Now you're gonna get me in trouble here. With the yellow owners. The yellow is 2D and looks not good to me. I might have bought yellow if it was better. The blue was also a possible choice, but only if very close to the blue that my dad's '69 Impala, which it isn't. I bought a red. I've also always wanted a really nice red. I am utterly thrilled with this red. I'm amazed by it every time I really take a look at it. Simply beautiful!

7) Dunno. Wouldn't have a clue as to why it would be.

8) I like the stook a lot. I needed more than two seats for now though. Maybe later though...

  1. No (see item #2 at https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...8&postcount=20)
  2. No, but the central console cup-holders do get warm
  3. A/C is weaker than most other cars I've owned, but it's adequate
  4. I get 15-17 MPG in-town (but with a lot of flogging and idling)
  5. Dunno
  6. Yes, but it's not any worse than most cars nowadays (and is better than my WRX was)
  7. Dunno

the ac does kinda suck but that can easily be altered. Just wrap some thermal rap (normally used for manifolds) around the ac line, and yes it is noticeable on a very hot day.

The insurance isn't that bad - a 10 rating, according to my insurance agent. He doesn't believe that will change anytime soon, even though he acknowledges that the "four-door" classification is a backdoor hack-job.

I have often heard that noone besides the stealership will work on rot. engine cars? Is that true? I really dont want to pay dealership prices for work on my car. Unless you guys maybe recommend getting rid of it before the warrenty runs out

no, you just have to add oil once in a while. changes are same regularity. my rx-8's scheduled maintenance oil changes are every 5K and so was my 4-cyl protege's.
2) your car becomes unbareably hot because the engine sits so far back
i haven't had that happen. i drive a 2005, and the console gets warm, but nowhere near unbearable or even noticeable. cup holders may make your drinks warmer faster.
3) the a/c sucks ( this might be true because my mazda 3 a/c really does suck )
yup, mazda for some reason makes weak ACs. it doesn't suck, it's just kinda weak. does the job though.
4) gas becomes quite expensive
yes, expect 15-17mpg in the city, 18-21mpg on the highway. plus premium, although you dont' have to. (search for regular vs premium)
5) your insurance will bend you over and give it to you hard if you're not over the age of 30 ( i'm 25 btw ; so what are you all paying? No tix / accidents here)
in Massachusetts, my insurance went up 5% when i got the RX-8.
6) the paint is cheap. it will flake and chip with any rocks / hard dirt that hits it. ( my mz3 paint is decent... although i dunno)
the paint is at least as good as the mazda3. the paint is pretty thin, but if you thought your mz3 was decent, then you will think the same for the 8.
7) All dealers are marking up the brilliant black color ( is this true? I have searched in my area and it seems all blacks are much more expensive )
depends on your area. you should be able to buy any RX-8 for very cloes to invoice minus rebates.
8) you're better off getting an s2000. handles better / better fuel economy ( although subjective, what puts the rx8 over the s2k in your opinion?)
never driven the rx8. supposedly the s2000 has similar driving feel. rx8 is much more practical: 4 seats, bigger trunk. for me, 4 seats is a big plus.

yay, hope you get the 8

Can we talk?

We've been talkin junk about Mazda paint. Even I talked junk about the RX-8 yellow 'n' blue.

There's something about Mazda paint that really catches my eye out there on the road. It's gotta be the paint, cuz it's the color of the car that causes me to look its way. There's a yellow RX-8 that goes the opposite way on my trip home from work and I do believe I haven't missed it going by once, because that yellow really hits my eyes. The blue does it to me too. And, of course, the red.

I think alot of the Mazda burnt orange too.

K. That's all I wanted to say. Thank you.

the RX-8 yellow is not as nice as the Protege5 yellow. the Protege5 yellow ('suburst yellow') is simply gorgeous, Mazda should've used that.

i love my blue. i really do love it, it's awesome. however, i do like the laser blue that mazda offered on the proteges (MP3 and 2003 proteges) slightly better, it's also really really awesome (the laser blue is a tad deeper, but still bright blue)

Totally agree, the red always turns heads but Mazda colors do look good, especially in person, a lot better than pictures could tell. Only downside of that is cops and well I bought silver, I mean after all it does reflect sunlight as they say. I had two friends so far ask if my car was scratched up when it was bright outside.

Sounds like maybe the '69 Impala blue i was refering to - a tad darker, yet not "dark blue". Still had "brightness" to it.

The RX-8 blue has grown on me since day 1 though. It does turn my head on the road.

Oil, I only have to add once every three months.
Paint, love it. Only one chip in 20k miles.
Dealership, if it's under warranty take it there for warrantied issues. If not you can go anywhere, especially for nonengine issues...oil, tires, intake, exhaust....
S2k, they are two totally different cars. 2 seater vs. 4 seater, convertible vs. coupe, and chick car vs. chick magnet......

1) No. Not sure why some of you are saying yes. Normal oil change interval is between 3k and 5k miles

2) No, funniest thing i've read today.

3) A/C is not great.

4) Gas mileage does suck

5) Insurance is cheap for me. 4 dr car, small engine = cheap, cheaper then mustang, 350 etc.

6) Paint is fine. you get rock chips but you get that with every car.

7) dunno

8) s2000 is small, noisy, uncomfortable and costs more to insure.
