The attitude that everything should be free is the primary reason most dealers have stopped selling RX8s. See monthly sales figures if you doubt dealers have stopped actively selling the RX8. They are selling less than one per month!

While the OP only needed to have the gas cap screwed on most cars arriving at the dealership will need much more effort to find and fix the problem. Most people are capable of screwing the gas cap on or get the clerk at AutoZone to do it for them and only take the real problems to the dealer.

If the original poster had called me for advice I would have only charged him $25 for a piece of black electrical tape to cover the light up with.

I used to use a paperclip to check codes in my old EG hatch.

So after 4 pages of arguments it still comes down to one thing, i dont know if i misunderstood but isnt his car's warranty over??. and if it is then you should pay, i mean we all know they are basically robbing you but thats their prices. you have two choices, take it there or take it to autozone like you did, that worked for you then YEAY!!!!!!!

P.S. i wonder, how much BMW would charge for that?

Why would that hurt RX-8 sales in particular, rather than all sales? FWIW, the P0455 gas cap recall also applies to CX-7s and MX-5s. Has there been a corresponding drop in sales of those?

this is why the satisfaction rate of the RX8 is in the dirt and Mazda doesn't use it in the overall customer satisfaction.

Um, I was at AutoZone the other day and noticed a sign on their window ... FREE Check Engine Light Help. So it seems that AutoZone's corporate policy states that they should help you with that.

Sorry to inform everyone that the AutoZone guy was not just doing this out of the goodness of his heart, but because it's part of his job.

Autozone will pull the code for free because...
a) its their gimmick to get you in the door and buy parts fromt them
b) they usually will not go past pulling the code (a half dozen things could have set off your code)
c) a parts guy getting paid $10/hr is doing it... and they have to pay him if he does something or not
d) they used a $300 handheld scanner which can't access 3/4 of the data available in the car to accurately diagnos a problem

Why does everyone think everything should be done for free in this damn world? The Mazda dealer is using some seriously expensive damn equipment to pull the code and THEN DO DIAGNOSTIC WORK to find out what actually threw the code. The mechanic costs money, and the WDS system costs even more money. Your car is out of warranty and no damn dealer should be expected to service your car for free (and if you do have a dealer that will - then good for you, but don't expect it).

And for the record, there are 9 things listed to check for the code your car had (there is no "gas cap loose" code) in the service manual... your precious Autozone guy didn't check any of them and then gave you false information

since so many people have a problem with auto mechanics why dont you go to school get your ASE certs learn everything there is to about a car and work on your own car. dont forget about the thousands upon thousands they spend on tools and equipment just to have some shitty person like yourselves complain about it. if they werent here then you wouldnt be driving because most people are too lazy, stupid, or dont want to get dirty to do their own work.

what is everyone elses job in here? why dont doctors give free consultations to find out what is wrong with you? every minute you spend in the doctors is being charged even if u are just in the waiting room its called a copay and insurance. same with any other service you get you are always paying from the 1st second you walk into the place.

an auto mechanic is just like a doctor except they fix your ailing car not your body and with all the different cars out there different engines components and other **** its alot harder than being a doctor because they dont just have to know 1 human body they have to know every make and model and if they dont they better damn well find out about it before they do any work.

and yes i have worked as a mechanic and my father has been doing it his whole life i grew up around cars and i can fix most of my own **** i guess im lucky that if my car breaks and i cant do it i can bring it to him and it gets done labor free.
