Hidden Clue Discovered to RX-8 Lifespan
Is it possible Mazda has known all along when it would deep-six the RX-8?
Hindsight is 20-20 - but this picture I snapped this morning could indicate that way back in the pre-release period of 2002 Mazda had already pre-determined an end-of-life date for the RX-8 ?
Here in an undisclosed location within my 2003 car is an easter egg that showed then-present and future manufacturing date markings. My car was one of the 1st boatloads back in July 2003 so it kinda looks like they 'knew' even in 2002/3 that 2009 was the end of the line. Ya I realize 2010 is now, but for all intents further meaningful production volume is over and we know the car is snuffed.
Curiosity would wonder what is behind this piece in 2010 models ?
Anyone taken apart their new RX-8 yet?

pretty sure i made the same observation based on the floormats (good till 08) to peg the end of the series I some years ago. :-)
lemme see if i can find the post...
EDIT: nope couldn't find it... maybe it was one of those 'almost posts' where i type it out but then decide it's not good enough to click the button, or maybe the thread is gone...

I don't think so. The internal parts for the engine core have not changed till Series II. Series II is really the "lifespan" fix for Renesis. Only time will tell of course. Putting 5-20 in this engine was / is a major mistake it's weak imo*. In particular having 5-20 it during the break-in probably does not help things. This is on Mazda no one else. They just can't swallow pride and put 5-30 in for some reason. Nissan is not much diff they have to keep rev-up engine oil problems hush hush and replements iffy.

tis a production date stamp for quality control. it helps them track lots if they find a problem. so it shows that they produced that part in 03. they would have decided way back when how long the production would last AT LEAST so thats why the choice of years to include on the stamp.

They probably also did this so that they could mass produce the parts and then shelved them until it was ready to be placed on a production car. They could have made a million of these parts for example in 03, and the stock could run them all the way to 06 for example, and they wont have to do anything to indicate when a QC was run on the part since the years would already be stamped on there.
They do the same thing with other items like fire extinugishers, boilers, water heaters, and other mass produced parts
