i have over 105 on my auto 04 rx8 on original motor but i have a strange feeling she might be trying to die on me...
im only getting about 160 miles out of a tank and she has strange idle and shifting. (seems to be lagging a bit). plus i get a squeling in park and drive.

Please give us some more info... What service and parts has the car had? Have you cleaned the MAF sensor? Have you replaced the fuel pump-filter? Have you been having any other problems. What mods have you got?...How long have you had it?... Have you ever done a de-carbon cleaner?
The only thing that i have that isn't stock under the hood is a K&N air filter. other than that its all stock. Spark plugs have under 1k on them along with the wires. new red top batter and thats all. i do get check engine lights frequently for "control circuit b low or something like that though. i have only had her for 2 years but since i have oil is changed every 3k with bosch filters and castrol oil. i also have problems in the summer with her running extremely hot when sitting for long periods of time which makes me think that my fan may be bad. i keep her fluids topped up all the time constantly checking engine oil and tranny fluid. there seems to be a strange clicking noise past the throttle body where the air intake meets up to the top of the engine. and i think i may have an exhaust leak right under where i sit (in that section of the exhaust.)

If your coils have not been replaced I would start there. Clean the MAF sensor and check your motor mounts. Changing coils is easy about 30mins even for a beginner. Cleaning the MAF sensor is easier yet.

Any suggestions at 72,000?
My '04 auto has 72,000. Last week I got rid of the K&N intake, cleaned MAF, threw in some Seafoam and had the MSP16 done (now that I know about it - having just joined the club). Dealer says CAT OK. Yesterday I replaced plugs and did fuel service (after 10,000 mi.!) and coils (after 6,000) plus an oil change. The car runs waaay better - good idle speed and more power than I've had in a long time!
On a recent trip in high ambient temps & altitude it had serious loss of power under load and stalled several times on refueling. Aside from the fouled plugs and suspect coils, one other concern is the condition of oil at this change -I've never seen it this funky (it's not H2O or coolant as far as I know). I change oil every 3,000 and have had all other interval service done religiously. I run it as hard as I can but now I'm crossing my fingers. As a low-level DIYer are there other things I might check? Are NGK plugs and wires OK? Are BHR coils mandatory even for a stock 8?

Well my engine ended up getting replaced at 109K, not because it had a problem. I hit a pig on 95 and it killed everything but the transmission under the car. Thought the engine was fine, but discovered it loosing coolant and discovered a crack on the side. So I ended up with a new engine and clutch too, all paid for by insurance under comprehensive, only cost me a $500 deductible.

yeah maybe. the grand total came in at just under $9k. just under what the car is worth. There was some discussion about just totaling it. insurance had about $3k in it before the engine. the good thing about the rx8 is everything is oem parts, cant get aftermarket BS cheapass stuff insurance likes to use. however that meant it took forever to get parts in. i thought it didnt make sense to waste it when the rest of the car was fine. my insurance company probably hates me, last year a kid with no insurance hit me and did about $4k of damage. no metal damage just broken plastic but that stuff is expensive and the labor adds up. also lightning yellow is a bitch to color match/blend so every time they repaint the whole car, and only with mazda paint ( cause im a dick and insist on it :P )
anyways i got it fixed but shes sitting now. after 5 months i gave up and bought a new car, lol. she runs good i've put 700 miles on her, she got 300 on her the day i picked her up to drive her home. engine is "broken in" now. Not sure what I'm going to do with her, keep her for fun, or sell or whatever.

I bought my car in Nov 04 new and it has 65,000 miles. In the last couple of months it started to die at the stop light when I would run for long runs. Usually 1/2 hour or more on the interstate at about 75mph. I had the ssv replaced and ran seafoam through it twice because of carbon buildup. I keep getting the check engine light for the maf sensor reading intermittent. I think I will replace that soon. I just keep cleaning it with maf spray. I changed the spark plugs and engine coolant for the first time. It now has way more power like it was when new and it idles much better.
I changed the brake fluid, transmission, and rear differential a couple of times over the years. Brake pads about every 2-3 years. Put in a high flow cat and the Mazda Speed sport exhaust from about the 2nd year of owning it. All recalls, including the flooding recall, have been performed but the engine mounts. I keep telling them to check the mounts and they do nothing, they must be fine. The air pump went out about a year ago and they replaced it last month. I swap oil religiously and run the hell out of it every day.
This is the most fun I have ever had owning a car regardless of the hiccups it has had. I don't think I can ever get rid of the car.

/\ WOW, 325K KMS that is 201,000 MILES on Original Engine!...I think we have a Winner!!
Sorry mate I don't have a contact in Sydney for Jap Import, do you have 'Jap Spares' like in Adelaide??
Edit: Give West End Mazda (NSW) a call, I/we used to exchange hard to get Mazda Parts with their large parts dept, someone there is bound to know
of a "local" specialist rotary importer you can call.

The dealer I bought the car from on Nov 29th sent it to a Mazda Dealer in town. They are the ones that said the engine has no compression. They tried to do the replacement under the warranty but Mazda wouldnt budge at all. I have an extended warranty with a 200 dollar copay. I paid it and they should have the new engine here by this coming week and replaced
