My '04 motor blew at 55K miles. It ran great at the time as well. I suspect a group of people who think their engines are fine are actually not.

Close to 150k, first time the exhaust smelled rotten.

I've always have that thought in the back of my mind since the car passed 110,000 miles, shaunv74. I'll need a new catalytic converter soon; no other symptoms, besides the faint smell of the 'rotten egg' from the exhaust.

Cold Start with > 45k miles with old coils
Cold Start with new plugs and coils

hi

i have 84500 miles on my 04, she is getting a new clutch fitted and the steering has started to get heavy at lower speeds when turning. its a bit intermittent but gets a bit better when warmed up. gonna try the cable connector cleaning fix 1st then if no good put a new cable on before a new/used steering rack.

but the motor is pulling great, i will change the sparkies/put magnacor 8.5mm leads on to keep her right. i did flood her over the christmas period as battery was down due to cold/snow and not being able to drive her. took a few hours to get her going again. ended up pulling the fuel pump fuse, turning her over, replacing it when fuel had burned then starting as normal, took a few goes of doing this then cloud of white smoke and she roared into life

changing the oil every 3k after say 60/70k miles and starting to premix to help the apex seals the engine should be capable of long life and 150000 plus miles

NC mileage on 2004 RX-8

I just bought a 2004 with 100k miles and all I've had to change are the ignition coils which seems pretty typical...

145k miles on my original '04. Just developed an internal coolant leak. Still runs fine... if you can get it started. That's a big if. It billows steam for a couple of minutes until it's dried itself out and then hums along just fine.

I've already pulled the engine and am preping a replacement. Hope to have the replacement in next weekend.

My '05 went about 98K miles with a LOT of track abuse (including operation at higher than ideal engine temperatures) before a coolant seal finally went.

Have you tried something called K-SEAL?

I don't know internally how big is the leak. It may be worth a shot for $15 before having to spend for something major. I have this stuff in my 8 as precautionary measure. Does not block the heater core, which is a big plus.

No I hadn't tried any kind of block sealer. It was really starting to use a lot of coolant. Start up was near impossible and once running it billowed enough steam to engulf the whole car for several minutes. I have used Stop Leak and Bars Leaks on other cars for external radiator leaks before, but not for anything involving the block. I would rather have a solid health engine. I've already pulled the engine and have just about finished preping the replacement.

I don't have a lot of money, so I am replacing it with a salvaged engine. I couldn't beat the deal. $1800 with 6 month warrantee for a complete engine (intake to oil pan). I will be keeping my old one to learn from and rebuild some day on my own.

From the German Forum:
The Swiss Rex-owner "Ruedi's" 03/2004 RX-8 HP's engine died at 291 400 km. (182.000 mls)
He had the highest mileagedistance in Europe as far as I know.
Compression finally was 1st rotor between 559 und 571 KPa, 2nd rotor between 535 und 557 KPa and the top speed was limited/decreased to 45-65 mph.
He sold the car for export and did buy another RX-8 from 01/2008 with 29.500 km's.........
I know that he commuted daily over 25 mls distance on the "Swiss Autobahn" at 75 mph permitted limit, serviced regularly but not extreme, changed the plugs each 37.500 mls and did not premix.
He regularely redlined a short moment in 3rd gear.
His engine-oil consumption was one quart per 1.800 mls (0,65 ltr/2000 km.) synth. 5w30 which he purchased at "Coop" (similar like WalMart) and he has a "defensive" drivestyle; 95 octane fuel consumption 11 ltrs/100 km.
At 254.000 km. (159.000 mls) he still had his OEM coils.

A few more until I reach 150,000 miles on original engine!

Might have to consider a compression test although my engine's still run very good
