Highest redlining car!

remeber this engine could go much higher, it's other things that fail like the flywheel and alternator and belts that tend to go zipping off at this rpm...
I think charles hill posted that he accidently dropped his into 2nd once, it went well over 12.5k rpm and is still running fine.

yes i have driven the 8 couple times. i'm very interested in this car, probably know more about this car than half the owners out there, thanks to this forum. as much i like this car, however, i'm not impressed with what it does with it's rotary engine. people talk about how efficient this rotary is being less than 2L, it can keep up with most 3.5L cars. I seriously don't see that as efficient. it eats similar amount of gas as my SUV. is that really efficient? if you want to talk about efficiency, here is the break down: small engine, good mpg, and similar power as bigger engines.
If you talk about COOL, it aint' cool when it screams and goes no where. all that 9100rpm is all pose unless it gives you screaming hp numbers to go with. Formula 1 cars are COOL because they got HP to go with their RPM. but with this car, not so cool when you look at the figures that 9100rpm generages. like one of you said, it definetly will be fun on track since you got so much rpm to play with around turns.
i see this car as a mix up and confused. exotic engine for an everyday purpose car. that's why i haven' t bought this car yet and don't believe it ever happening. if they throw in a turbo i4 from MS6 in this 8, i'll be all over it.
as stated in other threads, many of you knew this and bought the car as what it is, and i congradulate you all for having fine looking cars with great handling.

Is this your 8th grade thesis?

Let's just keep this thread on point and ignore him. We've hashed out that crap too many times already. He can start his own thread and see what happens.
So ... any other current production cars have the same or higher redline?

Yeah I accidently did that to mine as well. I was crusing on the highway and I was in 6th gear. I wanted to zip it into 4th for a little acceleration and the damn syncros are so good in the tranny that I screwed up and flipped it into second gear. I about crapped my pants. The tach pinged as far to the right as it would go. I had no idea what RPM's it was, but it was a heck of a lot higher than 10k. I thought sure I blew something up, but nope, it's been running fine still and it has been about 8 months since I screwed up.

Back on thread, anyone, anyone? I'm still searching, myself. I read somewhere on this forum that Mazda engineers were willing to certify the engine to 13,000 RPM (!), but Mazda decided not to; maybe because of the accessories, I suppose.

hey i know this has little relation to the thread, but when "having fun" do you guys send it all the way to 9. the FD redlined at 8k, but but the power band maxed out around 7k so id usually shift around there. i just get nervous somtimes, and wonder if im pushing it too hard (you become that way after owning 3 rotary engines)
oh btw it took about a week or so of getting used to the 8, and now i love it as much if not more than my FD, (its so hard to get it to understeer, puts a huge smile on my face everytime) sorry if was ever an *** guys haha
p.s. i THINK F1 cars redline around 16k but thats not for sure

Bragging is for people with little wee wee's. :p
I always wondered why the rotary's redline wasn't higher. What is the limiting piece in that puzzle? the apex seals? Seems like it should be able to go to infinity and beyond.

Answering a bunch of people:
To the putz early in the thread who started to hijack it by bashing the -8 ... : Go back to the Neon forum where you apparently belong.
To Ike, who was talking about RX-8's lack of a "usable power band": The WRX's "usable power band" is about 5000 RPM wide, (2K to just under 7K). Based on my driving, the RX-8's "usable power band" is from 3000 RPM to 9300 RPM - 6300 RPM wide! Seems to me to be a better "usable power band". And if you really want to split hairs and say "well, there's not much below 4000 RPM" I'll beg to differ, but will still point out that 4000 RPM to 9300 RPM is STILL wider than the WRX's powerband.
And to the person wondering about the "limiting factor" in the engine as to why it redlines at all - it's the entire package's ability to handle such sustained forces - the driveline, the mountings, the transmission, the accessory drives, etc. etc. etc. For the record, however, way back when in 1985, I drove a Formula Ford that belonged to a friend who had outfitted it with a 13B injected rotary from the RX-7 GSL-SE, and that engine had clutch-managed accessory drives that would freewheel above 7000 RPM, and was balanced, blueprinted and totally optimized for high RPM breathing and power. And that car "redlined" at a loft 14,000 RPM - 7000 RPM higher than the production installation of the same car.

I have no problem getting in front of people or speeding up real fast to get on the highway. This Car has plenty of power for a 1.3L and even if it is a small Liter Engine I don't expect big Gas Miles out of it. ITS A FREAKIN SPORTS CAR FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! I'm getting about 16/Gallon and I'm pushing on the gas hard a lot of the time. I hardly ever use it on the highway but when I do I have no complaints about gas mileage or power. Like I said before, you have to play with the gears in this car to fully use its power potential. Which really makes it much more fun for me.

I know that people (the general public) hear me revving my 8 with K&N and Borla at 9,200 RPM at a car show come running to see what the hell that "jet engine sound" or "airplane sound" was. And when I tell them that the engine was spinning over 9 grand they just about crap their pants.
They love it, it always gathers a crowd. BTW I don't do that all the time.
