the law if you think about it that Rex mentioned makes sense, in most cases in fact i do stop (i usually slow whenver there is a 'blind' part of the road im approaching with my vantage point obstructed by cars left of me. BUT, in this case there was little I could do, and they were jay walking so I'd find it hard to call me guilty...

In the grand scheme of things you did quite a good job of getting your Rx down to a non-lethal speed. So as far as guilt or fault goes, never mind.

It's not necessarily a well know law, I only became aware of it after the death at a crosswalk of a member of a cycling club I belong to.
cleoent,
Sorry I'm trying to be careful these days not to put any identifying personal info on this board, in case Mazda or anyone else tries to void my warranty.

Yeah, whenever there is a large object, be it on the left or right appraoching an intersection (a stopped bus, a parked truck) its always great practice to slow, because you are running full speed into a blind spot otherwise-had i had half a second more i would have been able to stop in time i think- im not even sure why the kids were in full sprint. the light was red, and cars were stopped. Oh well.

My gf almost ran over a pedestrian because she was in the same position too, a SUV stopped for no reason, she passed him from the left side and there was a pedestrian there. Certainly a dangerous situation.

Maybe twenty years ago, when I was just starting to drive, I was approaching a crosswalk (I'm pretty sure it was a crosswalk, but it might have been just open road). The cars in the first and second lanes had stopped, but I could see nothing at all in front of them. I was in the third lane, which was open. Just as I approached the crosswalk a dude in a wheelchair pulled out from in front of the car in the middle lane, right in front of me. I locked up the brakes on wet pavement and slid to a stop (no ABS) maybe a foot short of ramming him. He glared at me and rolled past.
That would have been my bad. Since then, I'm real careful about stopped cars.

On a similar note, a pedestrian once hit me. I was stopped in traffic in Georgetown when I heard a "thump." I look behind me and some young idiot on rollerblades had fallen and hit my left passenger door. He got right up and rollerbladed away.
I wanted to ask him if he was okay so that when he said yes, I could say "damn."

Thank goodness everyone was okay. Get your car fixed of those dents and all will be well. Sounds like a Heart paniking experience. Those girls probably learned their lesson...

pedestrains only have the right of way in a crosswalk. not in the middle of a 2 lane highway/road.

Let's just keep running people over, that way everyone will get a chance to learn :-p.
Just kidding, on a more serious note, --Glad everyone is ok.
PLEASE, PLEASE drive carefully, It might annoy he hell out of us whern we get close calls. But that is nothing compared to the feeling of guilt if you actually hurt someone. Even if it was their fault.

1) The idiot jay walker should feel lucky that they were hit by such a gorgeous car.
2) In the case of jay walkers, immediately after the impact, you should get out of the car and check for dents or damage on your car first, then give the jay walker a mean look. Asking whether they are okay or not is optional.
