Hit an animal on the way home
#51
Personally, if a small animal like a squirrel runs in front of my car, and I know that there is someone behind me, I don't break hard... No sense risking the life of the people in the car behind me (especially if there are kids in their car) for a squirrel...

This is why people think I'm overly cautious sometimes (as in, slowing for areas I can't see are well clear). We've got pheasants everywhere here and the oil cooler location makes me nervous,
Look on the bright side though; if you failed to see something that big, and hit it hard enough to do that damage, it's probably a good thing it wasn't a person

After all that, i would look at my car. and probably won't be driving at night for a long while. there is no need to destroying an innocent life.

is your rx8 leather? I know the steering wheel is. and do like steaks and burgers?
what about your shoes and wallet? those came from innocent lives too.
that being said, i'd feel horrible if i hit an animal. but its not like he went out hunting in an rx8. it was an accident and they happen just like you could step on a bug.

Theres no wolfs (or anything big?) in the city, but from time to time I have to dodge Cats and Dogs sometimes Squirrals ... I still remember there was a time, I was driving in Local streets, going for around 40 maybe 50 ? (It was a long 1 way street and it was like 2 am thats why Im going that speed). and all of the sudden I saw a cat sit right in the MIDDLE of the road with its head on the other side (meaning it didnt even cared/known that Im "coming" for it). U know a cat was quite small and its really dark so I cant even see it till like very Last monment.
I brake and ok, I stopped almost right in front of the cat before it "turned its head to me". then it walked away.
Ok. I could've just ran over it. it was really close and at first I really dunno should I stop or go as fast as I could to "fininish its stupid life". but I still tried my best to avoid it.
Since I dont like blood to spill all over my beloved 8. but hey, If I cant then, oh well. I can always wash it off with Soap and Water (Plus a sad repair bill ...)
*edited* car = cat

Running over cats to "finish their stupid life" is bad luck. Very bad luck

I saw an SUV stopped about 200 yards past a deer on the shoulder. The deer appeared to have it's legs under it, but the head and body were upright and it was looking around somewhat alertly. I stopped to see if the guy in the SUV needed help or to use my phone, but he wasn't the one who had hit the deer - he just felt bad it was still alive and was going to see if he could help it or put it out of its misery. I wished him luck and went on my way. I didn't feel any need to approach a wounded 200lb animal which is probably blind with pain and adrenaline to see if it would jump up and kick me to death. Funny how different people make such different choices.
Sorry to hear abou the car DarkBrew. I was guessing well over $1000 from the pictures - for $5000 they must be replacing everything that was even slightly damaged. When I hit a deer it was $10,000 damage (most of the difference was airbag and seatbelt replacement), but they only combed the fins in my oil coolers so I made sure I had documentation of that so I can get the insurance company to pay for replacement if those fail early.
Hope you're back in your own car soon! I had to wait 6 weeks for mine, mostly due to Mazda being slow to provide parts to the dealership who was doing the repair work. Worst of all, the first core-support they send was a bad fit so they had to express ship a replacement. Delay after delay.

Well, I got my car back about 10 days after it went in. The biggest ticket items other than the obvious were one headlight (broken on the bottom), the cold air intake (pieces broken off the hard plastic) and the missing fog light. There were a lot of little pieces broken and together they add up. Oh, and this being Canada, the repair parts are a lot more than in the US. Labour was just over $1K.
I was glad to get rid of the rental Charger and get back into my '8.

Glad it's all back together again - glad they replaced instead of repaired for you.
My figure was $10,000 US. My insurance company was trying to encourage the body shop to use their plastic repair kit to repair some of the plastic body parts. They body shop wouldn't do it though - it would never be as strong as the original (in most cases it was snap-in tabs that were broken off) and my car only had a couple thousand miles on it.
I was stuck in a Celica for 4 weeks (max time my insurance company would cover a rental), then shared a car with the wife for a week, then had a Hyundai Sonnata for a week courtesy of the very-much over-due body shop.
I actually considered a Charger before I bought the RX-8 (got 3 kids + gear to carry) so a Charger rental would have been interesting to me.
What's the best way to be certain you didn't really want to buy a car that you had previously considered? Borrow/rent one and drive it until you hate it. Glad you have no Charger-induced doubts there.
