Hi all,

has anyone successfully programmed their HOMELINK system to work with your garage door? I tried following the instructions and it showed all indication that it's working, except for the fact that it doesn't open the door

Once you've "taught" the Homelink button on your mirror using a garage remote, you are not finished.

Next you have to get on a ladder to access the programming button on your garage door. This will take 2 people. One person sits in the car. You push the (usualy) green button on the opener, and the LED will start to flash. Signal your helper to press and hold the Homelink button until you see a confirmation on the opener LED. The exact manner of confirmation will vary depending on what you have, but it should be apparent. It might flash quicker, then stop...or something.

 

Wow, I never had to do any of those gymnastics! I did what it said in the manual using the remote and sitting in the car... then it worked...and I did it again for our second garage door... and it worked again. Go figure.

 

I thought my homelink was not working after I programmed it too, but I was not pressing the button long enough. It takes about a second and a half before anything happens. I had been just tapping it- like I do for my garage door remote.

 

it doesn't take two people..

for garage openers that have cycled codes (most do), simply press a learn button on the garage opener in the back.. then go back to your car and press your homelink.. after a few seconds it should activate..

 

You DEFINITELY don't need a ladder like that guy said. You need to program your Homelink along side an existing remote. You press the remote and then press your Homelink button and it learns the code.

 

RX8Lover...please dont be so general and definite in your statements.

For those of use with openers which use rolling security codes - it IS necessary to push a "Learn" button on the motor housing which requires a LADDER unless you happen to be 9 feet tall or more.

For those who have older or "non-rolling" secruity on your doors then you dont have to hit a "learn" button.

The manual give instructions for both types. If one set doesnt work, try the other.

 

With an older garage door opener you just have to program the Homelink with your existing romote. With a newer opener you have to program with the romote and then do the "learn" button routine.

Wmine, I couldn't get it to work until I erased the Home Link system by holding the two outside buttons down simultaneously until it blinked. Then I reprogrammed it and it worked..

Yup, it's a button built into the car that allows you to program several different garage door openers into a small unit so you don't have to have a bunch of garage door openers rolling around the interior of the car. It's a great little invention. I'm surprised that they don't have it in Australia. It costs something like fourteen bucks to manufacture and install and most of that is the licensing fee to the inventors.

 

i got it to work! all i had to do afte teaching the homelink unit to learn the code was to tell my receiver to learn the code

 

Genie sells a conversion box to upgrade older garage door openers to the rolling code. The code changes every time it's used, for better security. Somehow it works with several remotes (more than one car with homelink as well as hand remotes). Dunno how it does that, but, anyway, it works.

My garage has two doors/openers. One with the Genie w/ built-in rolling code, the other with an "Overhead Door" opener w/ the conversion box. Two cars have homelink that open either door & a third car has a pair of remotes. All three cars therefore can open either door.

Now all I need is a robotic maid for the third button...:D

I'm not sure I would want to drive behind (or in front) of him in his 8 though at 3 feet tall.

And I wont comment on the 6' pole.

but I did get my house alarm to work with homelink

If I remember correctly, there is a difference between the Genie instructions & the RX-8 instructions. I'm not real sure which one works - I think the Genie instructions is the one that worked. Whichever, if the one didn't work, try the other, OK? There was a small difference & one worked, the other didn't.

 

I also couldn't get mine to work until I had "erased" whatever data was stored in there. I had never programmed anything to it before so I don't know why I had to erase it first...

 

I have a Genie (Intellisence or something...) I had the same problems. I call the techs (very embarrased due to my profession - Network Engineer/MCSE/MBA/CPA etc). Anyway, I was tring to program it from WITHIN the garage. The tech told me to park in the driveway and try it. Something to do w/my floresent lights. It worked!

My garage opener required a 2 step process
1) rearview mirror learn
2) Opener Motorhead learn button

Oh yeah, step 3....press the homelink button 3 times in succession for 1.5 seconds each. The light will change from rapid flash to steady (then release it).

 

I don't have a picture handy, but the Homelink buttons are integrated in the frame around the rear-view mirror.

I know this thread is a year old, but I'm having problems as well.

I don't have the rolling code system. When I press the Homelink button, it immediately starts blinking rapidly and doesn't stop.

I've tried pushing the opener button before, after, and simultaneous with the Homelink button to no avail.

What gives?

 

First, I press the first and third button of Homelink for 60 seconds to reset .. and the bliink gets faster (reset and ready to learn).... I placed a stool and stood up and press the learning button behind my garage opener (when lights blink .. it's ready to train Homelink device). I run back and press the homelink button until light gets faster and faster (that's its learning time). Done.

 

This has been answered before, but here it is again. If you have a rolling code system on the garage door opener, follow the directions that are in the OWNERS MANUAL, not the little QUICKSTART pamphlet. The Quickstart is missing a step. You will never successfully program your Homelink if you use the Quickstart.

If you have the manual for your garage door opener, use the instructions in there. All late model garage doors are compatible with Homelink and include Homelink instructions.
