I hate to give this advise, but I think a compression check is in order.

First, though, check the ignition system for good connections. How old are your coils/ hi-tension wires? Pull the plugs and check for even colour. It is also quite possible that you have an injector that is 'dribbling' when the car is shut off hot (causing a mini flooding event).

Also, if you have an early model ('03 to '05), the battery and starter have been updated to give more Amps and revs.

Best of luck.

If it is a 2004 or 2005, you may want to make sure you battery and starter are good. After 2005, Mazda has required a higher CCA for the battery and has installed a stronger starter. IF that has all been done, like Silver06 said, you may want to check the ignition system. You could also make sure there is no blockage in the intake. If all that checks, an engine compression test would be in order.

I have exact same problem, only trouble after the car has been warmed up and if it has been ran hard it will not start. Coils and plugs were replaced less than 10k miles ago. Had similar problem which Mazda "took care of" by doin their seafoam treatment but it quickly returned. Is this covered till 100k? I have 56k now, 06 auto.

Clean your MAF, consider doing the throttle body bypass mod. https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-yourself-forum-73/diy-throttle-body-bypass-mod-36389/

the only way they can void any warranty is to be able to PROVE that whatever you did actually directly caused the failure or whatever and it only applies to that specific part/problem.

Sorry to hijack your thread BUELLIGAN , but i`m starting to have the same issue. I bought my car one month ago (2005 - 21000 kms) and a couple of days ago it started to do that. In the morning it starts perfectly, iddle at 2000 gently climbing down on a couple of minutes, while i`m driving i have no problems what so ever, the power of the engine is perfect, stop signs and red lights the iddle stays firmly at 800, but if i stop the car for 5 or 10 minutes i have this issue, i have to turn the key for 3 or 4 seconds and today (1st time it happened) the engine would stop if i didn`t step on the gas twice, 30 seconds later the iddle is perfect at 800....really strange, the car dealer where i bought it told me that they`ve changed everything. How can it be coils if the car starts perfectly when it`s cold ? Any thoughts ? I`m calling Mazda now but any advice would be appreciated. Cheers

let me know how it goes, I ran my car really hard this weekend and it didn't take well. Today it would not start when I stoppped for gas. I had to let it sit for about 20min before it started. The problem is definitely getting more severe. I will be taking it in for service sometime next week. Does anyone think the plugs could be fowling? Plugs and coil pack replaced less than 10k ago.

is your oil level topped up and been changed on schedule? are you using a good quality top tier fuel. Ever since this whole ethanol BS came out, my car has been VERY picky about the quality of gas. it will set a crazy fuel trim and knock like hell with "cheap" gas.

running rich will do it! When it's cold it likes to be rich so it starts fine and then it should lean out as it heats up, but it's not. Can't tell you why it's not leaning out.

Hi guys
Took my car to the dealer last thursday, they`ve changed the sparks plug cause they were still the original ones (4 years old the previous owner never changed them neither did the salesman) and were completely trashed, just to sum a bit: my car was hard to start after a decent long drive, my idle had some issues, doing POT ....POT hope you get it, and i was starting to have problems with cold starts too. But it was really bad when i took it to the dealer, i arrived 15 or 20 minutes sooner so the shop was closed, when they opened it and signaled me to go in, the car simply didn`t start the 1st time. . So far so good, the car starts perfect cold or hot, and i even noticed how smooth and faster the engine is now at low revs. But as i was getting a bit paranoid,so i want to give it some more time to be sure everything`s fine. Fingers crossed. Sincerely, all the best to you guys.

Cleaned MAF, put new air filter in, and changed plugs and it still won't start when engine is hot. It used to start with a couple tries but now it just won't at all. If I take it in to get compression test not under warranty and it comes back that compression is fine will I have to pay for the diagnostic?
