Hot Weather+87 Octane=Power of a 95 Celica ST

So I left work today started my car and began driving... I thought I would throw the rpms up as I got on the interstate and as I did I noticed my cars power is terrible today! I stopped as I got close to the house and went from first to second and normally I will hear the tires chirp as I reach 2nd... No chirp... Power feels really low! Is it the gas? Is it the heat?

I would bring it into mazda to look at but every time I do they blame my problems on my Revi intake and I am tired of arguing with them about it...

Granted, I'm a total noob here, but from all I've read, you should cycle through a couple tanks of premium gas to see if the problem persists before seeking service.

Try using a GOOD octane boster to see if your problems goes away. My 8 loves 87 except when it gets HOT out there. If it helps then you know.

octane booster = snake oil.

I never had problems with 87 in the florida summer. What you describe isn't normal. Try finding another dealer.

True most of the time. But I did say GOOD octane boster. At the beginning of summer I first started getting PINGING . I had a full tank so short of draining it I tried a can of "NOS octane booster(Silver can, not the cheaper Blue). Shorty after a few miles of mixing The pinging went away, no BULL! Can anyone explain it?

No where does it say the RX-8 requires the use of 93 or 91.

87 is acceptable.

Look at this Post, it's an easy fix and has helped many. Takes a minute.

Hot weather + 87 Octane = less power. Any questions? The rotary is optimum with premium gas. Hot weather does not help. The owner's manual clearly states that premium gas is "recommended." It also states to never put gas with less then 87 octane in the RX-8.

recommended because the united states (and the world) is not a one size fits all environment. Climate, elevation, etc. are variables. so they recommend the octane rating that would work in all situations. It doesn't unnecessarily mean it's the best for the car.

you should always run with the lowest octane possible. For many of us, 87 is great.

i ran with 87oct. for three years then one day i decide to red line while getting on the freeway, well i got a cell, for three days i did the same thing and got a cell.
then i put in the higher Oct. and guess what no cell. i am a firm believer in 87 Oct.
but cells don't lie.. at least i think they don't...

i liked to run the higher octane every few tanks of gas, because they usually have better cleaners in them.

yeah, it's something I've always done. every 5 fillups I let the gasoline get down to near empty, fill it with 97 and run it. The toyota still works, 0 engine problems at near 100k of milage.

Already was done. Maybe without this mod I would have to use 92-93oct. No pinging with 89octane so far.

What do you guys think about my intake issue... Does the dealer really not have to work on it if its an aftermarket intake?

Put you stock airbox back on. This is what I do. You can leave the duct inplace but just change the box.

I left my throttle body coolant hose connected running down into the plumming even though it disabled.
