if you give the car gas and it doesn't rocket off you are lugging a rotary.

you need to redline it under a load. just flooring it in nuetral won't help.

just do it by "feel" my FD doesn't like to be below 2000rpm, it doesnt feel good

I shift when she beeps. Let it warm up for a few minutes before embarking on your voyage. Never floor it from a cold start. If you're in a hurry and don't wanna let it warm up idle, just be really gentle and shift as soon as you pass 3k. When the temp needle is in the middle, you can stop holding back.

I do get the 1st gear lock thing too, where it won't let you put it into 1st gear (even at safe speeds). The more I drive it, the better I've gotten at working with that, I think it's a safety feature for people who can't RPM match properly.

I actually don't always shift at redline, my exhaust emits a lot of noise if I'm flooring it at high RPMs so there's a certain finesse involved in not attracting unwanted attention.
