How to custom order a Rx-8 that I like

I have been trying to get my local dealer to find me a 06 Shinka or 06 GT with NAV for a while with no luck. So is it possible to custom order one directly from Mazda itself?

No, there are 2006 Shinkas (I made the same mistake). On the Mazda "build a car" website you need to know to pick the right exterior color to be given the Shinka package option. And no, they won't let you add NAV to a Shinka. Wierd!

Yes I do realize there is no NAV option for 05 or 06 Shinkas, but the issue at hand is how to custom order a Rx8 with the options I want, instead of wait and pray Mazda will randomly get it right, and ship it to a random dealer not too far from me.

First, go to mazdausa.com. Enter your zip code in "Locate a Dealer". Search inventories. If you can't find anything to your liking, enter a different zip (further away) and repeat. The '06s are just starting to trickle in, so it may be a little while before you can get a good sampling of inventory. If all else fails, you can go to any dealer and tell them that you want to order a car.

Talk to one of the inventory/sales manager people. I went through Costco so I called them first and they forward my information to the dealership I picked off the list. I then talked to that guy, who was an inventory/sales manager. I told him what I wanted and got my order started. They ended up changing specs on a previous car in their list so I would get it quicker.

Yeah, thanks BG, I wish I knew this sooner. I kept in touch with my local sales manager for a long while, but he keep saying he couldn't find or get one. It never occur to me I should just tell him to do a custom order for me.
What I hate about the current situation is that there is no known way to put a NAV in a Shinka at the factuary. Of course since I get lost driving all the time I really need one. Has anyone talked to Mazda about putting the NAV in a Shinka?

Sheep,

You CAN custom order an RX-8 through Mazda (I did last year) but it needs to be within the Mazda's specified options.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to order an RX-8 with a Navigation system in a Shinka. I've had a few conversations with Mazda sales people, MNAO, and even the owner of a dealership...it remains a mystery.

You cannot 'custom order' anything from Mazda that you cannot build on their website. If they let people deviate from that, where will it end?
Leather interior without GT pkg, GT pkg without sunroof?, etc etc...

They should just let you build your RX-8 the way you want! I mean come on its our car and we're going to be driving it so it's ridic how they limit you sometimes! Just my thoughts.... GOOD LUCK finding one!

So, what are the workers at the factory doing while they are waiting for you to place your order?

What is the exact process? Did you order via the deal or directly through MNAO? I am trying to see if I can skip my dealer as the sales manager is rather unhelpful...

The dealership fills out an order to submit to Mazda.

^^ Yup.

I'm fortunate enough to know someone at Ford Motor Company (client and close personal friend of mine) so he took care of all of it for me. From the time I ordered, to the time I signed on the dotted line (5 months later) I never had to hassle with a salesman.

Typically, you just have the dealership do it for you. Be prepared that they will not like this process. They will try and find a car on their lot that fits your criteria, they'll offer to swap out parts (trunks, etc.. if you do / don't want a spoiler), they'll offer to trade cars with a dealership, they'll do inventory searches throughout the country...etc etc.

WHY go through all this trouble you ask?! They'd rather sell you a car TODAY then have you order it, and in the 4 months it takes to get it , have you fall in love with another car.

On second thought: not sure this worthy of an arguement...

Mine was easy and smooth. Of course, at the beginning the dealership didn't have an order form for custom orders or anything yet. They just had two or three cars already alotted to them. They called me back a couple weeks later and said they could change the specs now on their alottments to what I wanted and did. When the car was ready they made an appointment for me to come in and sign the papers. I did, price already had been determined. I just had to sign stuff (which somehow managed to take four hours on a busy Sunday). In and out with no problems from the dealership.

I ordered mine, and it can take awhile. I ordered it about a month ago and don't have a VIN yet. I shouldn't have a nightmare wait like bunnygirl did since I ordered it after they were already being made, but I think the delay in getting the 2006's out has made the back up a little long.

If you're doing a custom order...wouldn't you have to pay pretty near full retail if not more?

Not only the delay in the 06s, but the packaging has never been a strong point for the 8. You can't even get one loaded without a sunroof. I feel like something is cookin for next year's model so I'd wait altogether until you find out more news unless you're just dying. With the lack of 06s, you have to think something will present itself in the next few months.

Nope, you can negotiate the price just like normal.

I paid under invoice on my custom ordered '05

I am station at Ft Polk, LA, which is in the middle of no where, and the nearest dealer is an hour and a half drive away. Being currently deploy to TB central really doesn't help. I am trying to get a hold of some other internet sales manager and see how it goes.

That's weird. In CA, the RX-8 wasn't available through Costco pricing. Good for you! No sales tax in OR either right?

I used the Costco autobuying program so it was $300 over invoice for my RX-8, and I did a custom order. If they won't negotiate with the order, spend $25 on a Costco membership for the year.
