stalling is pretty easy. and you usually stall when you dont give enough gas as you are letting the clutch out.

and yes, you have to give gas while you are letting the clutch out. thats the tricky part that will take practice ... knowing how much gas to give and how slowly to let the clutch out. once you get it tho, its like riding a bike ...

Sounds good, thanks for all the info guys, can't wait to get permit now and go down to Angel Stadium parking lot! Oh yeah, and get the Rx-8, just need to debate what cooler, I am thinking Black or Silver.

most of these questions are answered by reading the manual. i think you can find it at mazdausa.com you may have to register as an "owner" to have access, but you can give it a shot ...

its funny to see how many people here are flaming him for learning how to drive on an 8. first off i learned how to drive stick on the 8 and second many people here did to. Hmmm lets remember the thread where it asked was the 8 your first manual? i dont remember seeing anyone get flamed there. really its not hard to learn stick took me a day to get take off and switching and a week to smooth it out. If you cant learn how to drive stick on the 8 which i think is really easy since for me its nice and smooth, well then may god help you.

Yeah, my 8 is also the first manual that I've owned. I did have some practice driving manuals before taking the plunge, mostly borrowing friends' cars. The best practice was driving around in the mountains in Costa Rica in a manual Toyota Corolla, going up inclines, and especially having to go extra slow over big rocks and ditches in the dirt roads

Thanks for the confident boost man. I have some questions, since I will most likely get the car used, or i might get a new one if I can get a sweet deal for like 24k. Was there any differences between the 04-05-06 that are worth reconizing? And what would be the right miles to get, I am thinking below 20k for a 04, below 10k for 05 and no miles for an 06

i bought an 04 in march of 05 with 4k miles on her...havent had any significant problems other than the usual rx-8 crap. constant brake squeal is the only one that hasn't been fixed completely yet.

tho when i got her, i went through EVERY TSB (technical service bulletin) and found every one that my car fit into. i checked it all out and had everything that could be fixed under warranty done.

mine has also flooded 2-3 times in the past couple months, but that is because i was bad and didnt treat her right. each time i got her started with the dechoking procedure, so no trips to the dealer ...

Well I learned how to drive stick on my 8 ((bout 2 months ago)). =) Got tired of the auto's performance and just felt like a woman driving one ((no offense to the ladies)) so I decided to make the leap....besides why the hell would you buy a sports car if you were never going to treat it like a sports car???

I figured what the hell you know it will be worth it....and every second has been...

hell I had a 1-2 hour lesson on the car in which I never left a parking lot...bought the car and then made a 2-3 hour drive back to San Antonio, Tx from where I was at....tons of stopping and going lol...and the first week was hell...

I did more damage to that clutch in one week than a skilled driver would do in a year =P....but you know what forcing myself to learn to drive the manual in a city enviroment was worth it =)...tons of stop and go practice and I can't even remember the last time I stalled ((lol bout 2 weeks actually)) .....

besides dude...chicks dig guys who drive the stick....that is all

((P.S The wear on my clutch isn't such a bad thing....just means I get to upgrade to the aftermarket quicker =P))

instead of reposting a bunch of stuff, id suggest searching for these terms:

flooding the engine / dechoking procedure
TSB (technical service bulletin)
brake squeal
oil consumption
winter wheels (if you are anywhere NEAR a place where it snow, you must have these)
gas mileage (ouch! but true...he should know there are issues with bad gas mileage)

what am i missing here?

Why is brake squeal an issue? Cars from all makes have brake squeal and its quite normal.

Vossant, i hope your brother is a good teacher. You can read and ask questions all you want but there is no substitue for a good teacher and practice. Good luck.

I've been driving for 18 years and the RX8 was my first manual transmission. I was due for new car when the 04 RX8 hit the dealers and I couldn't pass it up. I took a crash course from a friend in a Nissan Pathfinder and was on my way. It is easy to stall the rotary engine when engaging first from a full stop. I recommend practicing holding the rpm at 2500, then slowly coming off the clutch until the car starts to roll forward. Do that over and over again in a parking lot. That way you can just concentrate on your clutch foot and get a feel for the engagement point. That rpm is high enough that you won't stall as easily. For the first few months I would hold at 2500 rpm before engaging first while on the road. Once you get a feel for your car you can back off and save some wear.

you must not have the curse of the squeal. it is constant and only effects certain 8s. it is almost as bad as having track pads on and driving around the city. no, this is not normal ... if it was normal, there would be no TSB on shims and my dealer would not be changing out my rotors under warranty.

It also needs to be noted that these are all issue that have for the most part been fixed.

You forgot to have him search for the pluses.

You can fit a ton of stuff and you can easily have sex in it to name a couple....

Probably because there's a 12.77% chance he won't get an 8.

Well, I got that percent through qualitative analysis. Nah, I actually made it up. I would like some recommendations on audio systems at this point, and where to install.

What My List Is:
4x Polk Audio MMC5250 $299 (each) / Polk Momo 5 1/4 Component System / 2 in front door and 2 in rear deack
2x Rockford Fosgate Punch Stage 3 12'' Dual 4ohm Voice Coils Component Subwoofer $499.98 (for both) /Sub / Trunk
2x Lightning Audio LS10-03 $109 / 1.0-farad Capacitor / Mounted next to amp
1x Rockford Fosgat PowerT20001bd $1,299 / 750Wx1 Car Amp / Mounted in trunk or lid
1x Eclipse AVN7000 $2,399 / Headunit Flipout DVD + Navi / In dash

Undecided on amp to power the Polk Component Speakers, and undecided on the headunit ( definitely want eclipse though, their craftsmanship is remarkable) I will take all of the comments, please dont post just to post either I want some good information on my choice of components or recommendations for a different component in this setup

Thanks

-Will
