The bumper, exhaust shrouds, all the plastic in the back and the wheel wells all burned and melted. Burnt coils and a plugged cat caused the problem. Coils, plugs, cat all replaced and then it happened a few months later.

The service tech told me the exhaust temp was over 2000 F.

Scary.

There were 4 RX-8s being looked at in the dealership I am dealing with--you're likely one of them.

I heard 2 settled out quickly.

That leaves you and me, A-TXRX

They offered you only $1K less with 20K more miles and 2 fires. No offense, but now I really feel screwed--surely a car with 27K miles and a new engine (2 in fact ) and no fires is worth more than $16K...

Mazda...I'm waiting on that return call. Patiently, for now.

Actually, $16K is not that far off for trade in on a car in fair/avg condition:
KBB - $15,700
Edmunds - $17,300

Neither here nor there... We wouldn't be trading the car in anyway. Defective--needs to be replaced.

Plus, it would be in Excellent condition anyway...more like $18K.

Did you ever think that KBB and Edmunds know the RX8 is a POS and has major problems so the depreciation is accelerated? That's my take on things.

When/if the problems are fixed, used car buyers will be getting awesome deals!

I didn't mean to imply that Mazda was offering either you or A-TXRX a good deal on your problem cars. They aren't.

However, $16K-$18K is a pretty typical "trade in" number for that year/mileage, particularly since dealers never consider that a car is in "excellent" condition no matter how good it looks.
