How far can you go once your gas light comes on?
Howdy all,
Got my 8 almost 4 weeks ago, and im LOVING it. I drive tons for business so i already have 3000 miles on it heh.
My question is about the gas light and how far you can generally go after it comes on. I know in my old car (98 saturn SL1) i could go about 30 miles before i REALLY had to fill up. In the 8, (lets assume city driving with AC on etc etc) how far could i push it before I really ran out?
Im just curious, I get about 250-260 miles per tank, and just wanna know all the info i can "just in case" i ever need it
Thanks!
jeff

Honestly I can drive a good 40+ miles after the light initally comes on. (No speeding or heavy accelerating though.)
You're not really in any serious trouble until the gas nozzle is half way past that letter E. When that happens, get gas in the next 2 miles or have a nice walk.
Just so you know...the light comes on when you've used 13.5 gallons.

depends on how you're driving and what kind of mileage you are getting. i think that the light comes on when there is 2.9g left. my last tank i got 19.22mpg. so, assuming that i'm getting around that consumption rate, i could go another 55 miles after the light comes on. also, it will make a difference if it is city driving or highway.

Same here. Right around 40 miles.

My tank holds exactly 220 miles of gas. Exactly.
Every 1/4 on the gauge is exactly 50 miles. Exactly.
When the light comes on, I have driven exactly 200 miles and I can drive an additional 20 miles before I run out of gas.
Pretty remarkable, actually.

I don't think it's something people do on a regular basis. Sometimes you just can't help it.
I can remember last year when we had all the hurricanes people were waiting in line to get gas. Some stations ran out forcing customers to then find a station that had adequate amounts of fuel.

thanks for the replies guys (and girls maybe) :-P
I was just worried because I know the rotary sucks more gas then the car im used to... so its nice to know im not going to be stranded like 15 or 20 miles after the gas light comes on. Besides on the route i drive for work (400 miles twice a week - texas to arkansas) even if the light comes on from what im seeing ill hit a gas station at some point before i really run out. There are usually gas stations every 20 or 30 miles.
Interesting to see others fuel economy too. I get about 65 miles for each 1/4 of a tank I use. (its a brand new 05 with the latest flash) So im actually pleased with the milage (had me worried from some of the horror stories ive read before i actually bought my 8)
Thanks guys!

I think your best bet is to record your mileage for a few tanks .. then use the LOWEST mpg (that way you have a buffer zone) to figure how many miles you have left. Then simply multiply by how much fuel is left (I have 10 liters left when light is on ... so 2.9 gallons sounds right to me).
ie 15mpg x 2.9 gallons = 43.5 miles ... before you car sputters and dies.

Without trying to encourage another "gas mileage thread":
When my light normally comes on, it takes 13.3 gal to fill back up. Subtract from the 15.9 gal tank size, leaves 2.6 gal left in the tank.
Multiply that by whatever your normal mpg is, and you have the distance you can travel before you run out (17 mpg city/22 mpg highway).

I try to always find a place to fill up when the light comes on or soon after and it takes about 13.5-14 gal to fill up. The light comes on at around 240-250 miles. I can get another 40 miles of of the tank, at that point the gauge is even with the last line above E, that is as far as I ever go, when I fill up at that point, it will take 14.8-15gal. Right at about 300 miles per tank (from top of Full to the line just above E). I get about 20MPG (20-22 (21.5 most of the time, but lately with the cooler air its been a little lower)) so I should have another 15-20 miles in the tank, but I am to afraid to try it, plus I dont want to suck up all that crap in the last .9 gal on the bottom of the tank.
Most of my fill-ups I put in about 14.2-14.8 gal and get me about 260-280 miles on the tank.
The most Ive ever put in was on a road trip, all highway, 65-72mph, cruise control and A/C about 30 mins out of every hour. I pushed my luck and decided I could make it thru an area of 50 miles with no fuel exits....it was really close!!! I finaly found a exit with a good gas station. I had been on E for quite a while, I had 350-360 miles on the clock and the car took 15.2 gal when It shut off, I had gotten about 23mpg. I decided to see how much range I could get since I had another 900 miles left on the trip. So I toped it off till I could see the gas in the top of the fuel filler neck (about 2.2 extra gal) It was getting dark, and cooler, so I was able to run at 65-72mph cruise control, with NO A/C. I got the same 360 miles, so I was guessing i had used about the same 15 gal, but the gas light had just come on, so I still had about 3 gals left, I decided to stop and get food and gas anyway, but I think I could have made it just over 400....on fumes.
Its strange, my gauges is always the same in how it reads, but its not even in how much gas is used vs how much it moves... this is counting UP from 0 miles)
My 1st 1/4 tank is always at 50 miles city or 70 miles highway
My 2nd 1/4 tank is always 120 miles city or 150 miles highway
My 3rd 1/4 tank is alwasy at 200 miles city or 220 miles highway
My fuel light always comes on at 240-250, regardless
crazy, but I like it!

when the gas gauge get 1/2 through the "E" about 1/8th below empty.. that's usually about 50 miles for me. I'm religously getting low 20's now no matter how hard or soft I drive the car. Largest fillup i've done is 14.8 gallons and usually if i fill up @ empty I only get 13 gallons.

um, isnt it bad to drive on the "last dregs" of the tank anyway? shouldnt everyone be filling up at 1/4 tank? mebbe its just growing up in chicago ... you never let it get below 1/4 in winter or you were in T-R-O-U-B-L-E ...
