There is no standard speed for curves for me, but I've noticed that I tend to accelerate when I see one, instead of slowing down ...

Well I've hit redline several times (68mph) then I back off and hit the 10 to 15 mph curve.

On some corners I can slide it through.

If you got the guts you will realize the car can handle anything.

Oh, don't forget to go to track racing school to learn how to drive.

Then obey the traffic rules. Save your speed for the track.

84 on a 25mph cloverleaf, my favorite one, the wheels barely slip out in the rear.

Interesting topic everyone - I am new to driving a manual tranny and have a few questions relating to my rx-8 performance:

1. I'm pretty sure i know what the 'heel and toe' downshifts are but I would like someone to explain for clarity. I usually slow down in turns by downshifting and slooooowly lifting off of the clutch instead of using the brakes. Will this burn out the clutch or is it bad in any way?

2. I've noticed that i don't need to push in the clutch all the way to the floor to shift. has anyone else noticed this? i feel like the smoothest shifting is when the clutch is in about 2-3 inches off the floor.

Thanks!

1. Do a search for heal-toe. Also, go to an HPDE track day promoter's websight, they have good articles on this topic. It's complicated. Essentially involves matching RPMs to lower gear selection for powerband performance on curve exit.

2. If you don't have that thing full depressed at redline going from 1st to 2nd, you're going to hear about it from your tranny.

Back on topic...

This seems like a silly question. A: with no standard corner, how can we compare speeds. Banked turns (like highway on ramps) will drastically effect your cornering limits. Also, entry, mid-corner and exit speeds should all be different. I suppose you mean mid-corner though. B: When driving near the edge of our abilities (when people talk about fear and max speed we're talking about the edge) why are you taking your attention off the road to see what your MPH is? I don't even have a speedometer on my race motorcycle.

Answer: I take safe turns at <= .98 G (unless drfting in safe environment).

I agree, I judge my speed by the red line beep.

Max speed is 68. Down the short straight away where I was not going to max out the corner I noticed 57 mph. However I have beeped right before I enteer the corner,
