Dude, do a search next time.
Here are some break in procedures that I collected while being a noob.
RACING BEAT
- For the first 1000 miles (1609km) do not accelerate under full throttle.
- During the first 1000 miles (1609km) do not exceed 4000 RPM.
- For miles 1000-2000 (3218km), expand the RPM upwards - but do not accelerate at full throttle.
- Over 2000 miles (3218km), full throttle and high RPM is acceptable.
Japanese Rotary Mechanic
0-600 (965.4km) Follow the Manual, but keep it under 4000
600-800 (965.4 - 1287.2km) Open it up a bit, vary accelerations and speed RPM < 5000
800-1000 (1287.2 - 1609km) Drive the car, enjoy it but still keep RPM's < 6000
1000-1250 (1609 - 2011km) Drive it as it's powercurve intended it to be RPM's < 7000
1250-1500 (2011 - 2413.5km) Test the car frequently from RPM's 6000-9000 in every gear
> 1500 (2413.5km) Drive it anyway you want, U DA MAN NOW!!!!!!
Rotary Tech
0-100 miles 4000 rpm
100-200 miles 4500 rpm
200-300 miles 5000 rpm
300-400 miles 5500 rpm
400-500 miles 6000 rpm
500-600 miles 6500 rpm
600-700 miles 7000 rpm
700-800 miles 7500

I hit 600 miles on monday. I decided to wait a full thousand miles to get on it. I made it to about 609 miles, and then gunned the sh*t out of it. Although only until about 7,000 rpm. Tonight, I heard the buzzer for the first time :D I love this fricken car.

What's a break-in? lol... I think I took it to the beep the first day I had it. Look, it seems to me people don't understand what a break in is. The hardest thing you can do to a new engine is just keep it at the same RPMs for an extended period of time. Beyond that, the engine isn't really going to care. So breaking in an engine means that you don't want to go on a 6 hour trip down the high-way as soon as you get the car and hold it at 4k rpms for that time. I got this straight from the mechanic when I bought my 8. He said drive it like it was meant to be driven, and I did. It's been over a year now and no problems. If it can't stand up to driving like it's supposed to be for the first 600 miles then you are probably going to have problems anyway. You aren't going to break anything or have any trouble if you take your car all the way up to the red-line and it has 3 miles on it. You don't have to be in "race mode" in order to rev the car, it does it very easily. Dealerships do it all the time with their demo 8's. I know because I test drove the **** out of one and it only had 23 miles on it. By all means let the car warm up but who cares about a break in...really. My dealership didn't even care, they said drive it like it's supposed to be driven from mile one and you won't have any problems.
Just my two cents on the myth of staying below a certain RPM (in modern cars). I'm sure someone is going to argue with me but that's the way i've broken in anything I've ever had (cars, SUV's, bikes) and I've never had problems.
ADDED: Just read the break in secret link that was posted above. I guess that's pretty much what I have been doing for years. It's not as scientific as listed but I tend to run the snot out of new cars and bikes and never had a problem. I agree with his theory because I've basically tested it over and over again with no problems.
