How long did it take?

i went in looking to buy a miata because i had one from '91 to '95. after sitting in the miata, my 6'2" frame decided against it. i never really looked at the rx-8 until that night. i looked at it from across the showroom, walked towards it and opened the door and sat inside. i closed the door and quickly thought to myself, "this is pretty kewl. i could get used to this." the salesman and i walked outside to look at the ones on the lot and he asked if i'd like to take a test drive. i quickly said no, but my gf suggested i drive it to see if i like it. after a minute, i told the salesman i changed my mind and would love to take a test drive. after he entered the back seat, gf in the front seat and me at the controls of a 6 speed again, we went down the road to enter this dealerships "road test track." it involved some highway, curvy and bumpy roads. after returning, i had this smile on my face i haven't had since i had my miata.
16 days later, i'm driving a red 2004 rx-8 with a 6 speed, wing and the sport package. i have been in love with this car ever since. changing oil is a cinch and checking it does not bother me at all. (i'm not even going to comment on gas mileage)

I'd have to say 23 years. I lusted after a RX-7 when in college and never bought one (got married instead - poor judgement there!). Once the RX-8 came out, I knew I wanted one but still took me almost a year to buy it.

I first saw the RX-8 in person at the Auto Show in Toronto in Feb 2003. We were still driving our '92 MX-3 GS at the time and it wasn't costing us much to keep on the road so I wasn't in any hurry to buy a new car ... but man, I loved the RX-8 even though it was roped off at the show and I couldn't get anywhere near it. I went out a dealership when they first startedrriving in Toronto ... don't remember exactly when , maybe Sept/Oct 2003. We could look in it , but the salesmenwouldn't start it up, and obviously wouldn't let us drive it.
Then in Oct/Nov 2003, I found out I had a buddy working at another dealership in Kingston (about 2 1/2 hours east of Toronto). We were down there visiting family and so I took it out for a test drive. I was in love ! But we still weren't really in the market for a car. However, over the next several months, I was talking about the 8 non-stop, test-driving a bunch of other cars under the guise of "Honey, I just want to know what car we're going to get next ... I'm not ready to buy one". Yeah right ! Did all kinds of research on the 8, was on this site alot reading about "issues", was back and forth for months on which car to buy.
June 2004. My wife and I are out for my 40th b'day. I look over at her and said "let's just buy the Acura RSX, it's the most practical car for us, we can drive it all year round, I can fit my goalie equipment in it and it's cheaper than the other cars we're looking at". We'll keep it for 3-4 years, then get something we really like. But then the lightbulb comes on...I say "Why wouldn't I spend a little bit more and get something that I'd love for at least 3-4 years." She says "If you hadn't been so back and forth about this decision over the last few months, I would've had a red 8 in the driveway for your birthday !" 2 days later , I had one on order , it was on the train from Vancouver. I couldn't be any more in love ... the wife's not bad either !
Long story short ... I know "TOO LATE" ... about 9 months or so.
BTW ... we're putting the 8 away for the winter (maybe this week since there may be snow coming) and will be driving the '92 MX-3 ... the MX-3 is still going strong ... about 270,000 kms on it (170,000 miles).

To be fair, I didn't really get serious about car shopping until about 3 or 4 months ago when I became aware of the new 2005 Mustang. Just prior to that, I was pretty bent on replacing my truck with a better truck, but my good wife suggested that I keep the truck and get a car (she happened to be sitting in a new turbo Miata on a Mazda dealer's lot at the moment). I thought about it and decided that was a great idea!
So, I embarked on reading everything I could get my hands on regarding the slick little Miata and yet to be released '05 Mustang. I was fairly impressed with the Miata but balked at the lack of trunk space and small size. The Mustang looked cool but the older style live rear axle, so-so brakes and high insurance rates caused me to consider a bunch of other sporty cars that were in that price range or maybe a little higher. Soon, I was reading review after review on the turbo Miata, RX-8, Nissan 350Z, Honda S2000, etc. I finally did an extensive test drive in the 8 and drove it home. It's probably worth noting that I once owned an '85 RX-7 and absolutely loved the car.
So, I guess I did about 4 months of shopping with the intent to buy something.
