Talking

I voted "4 Years," but that's not really accurate for several reasons:

1. I'm not keeping a car that's older than a decade old again, like my old '98 SVT Contour. That thing was literally falling apart at almost 16 years old when I finally sold it for $500 to a mechanic friend who rehabbed it and sent it on to a better life. I don't wanna drive a car into the ground again. But saying I would be getting rid of my RX8 would be...

2. ...Kind of a misnomer, because when I sell my 2007 RX8, I'm just going to buy a good-condition/low-mileage 2013 RX8. UNLESS...

3. ...Unless they come out with an RX9 or resurrected RX7 - or whatever they end up calling it, with the 16X Rotary, before 4 years is up (I know I know, probably not happening, but I can dream right?). Then I will be all over one of those.

In fact, I was seriously considering the 2004 Mustang until I learned that it would bump up my insurance rates considerably. So, I shelved that idea until the recent announcements of the new 2015 Mustang...
Weirdly, just a few days ago I was driving along in my highly-recognizable black RX8 with its neon-green rims, and some random dude in a red new-model Mustang flagged me down into a parking lot, and then handed me the long-missing, expensive second FOB key to my 8 (didn't come with the car), and told me he was the previous owner of the car and had just found the FOB key in his garage earlier that very day and stuck it in his glove box in case he saw the car out and about (Oahu is a small island, and he being Army and me being Navy put us both squarely within the Schofield/Pearl Harbor area). We chatted about mods and cars for a few minutes, and he said he missed the 8 because even though the Mustang is much faster on the straight-away, it's way more expensive, doesn't really get any better gas mileage, no real back-seat access, and compared to the balance and agility of the RX8 it feels like driving one of those huge, boxy old 1980's boats with the horrible spongy-feeling suspension and kinda sketchy handling.

So yeah, I like the 8 series a lot, and I don't see myself in another car unless the 8 just becomes hopelessly obsolete and there just isn't any other option beside migrating to like, a 2019 or 2023-model Evo or STI or BR-Z or something.

I'm keeping mine until my legs can no longer depress the rather heavy clutch.

You know what? I was just asking myself this question. I was recently toying with selling my R3 and was bummed.

I had my Turbo II RX7 for 14 years and invested over 50K into it creating a 2600 lb. 500+ HP track / street monster. Then out of nowhere sold it!!

Now I am looking at this bone stock R3 and to be honest every year that goes by, I want to keep it more. I only take it out for special occasions, and for trips to the mountains. It only has 26K miles on it and I really want to keep it a long time. I really dig this car.

I've owned my share of sports cars in my elongated life. My 07 6spd. gives as much fun as an old man can handle. It's true that it will not burn out like my old 63 split window vette.,but it's sure a great handling car. I'll stick with it until my old knees and back won't let me get in and out.

Although I have had some thoughts of letting the car go in this past year…I just can't do it! I think it will always be with me

I kept mine from 2006 to 2012. I miss it every day but it was the correct financial decision.

I've owned 5 cars that total...the first two are gone. After that I pick only cars I'm willing to keep up from the start (the other two were used and abused).

So for your answer...till I have to give it up. It's a great car.

This is actually my second RX-8, and I'm in my sixth year of ownership. I tend to hold on to things I really like, and I don't have a reason to sell it. I've had my 10th Ann RX-7 for 11 years now...

My 1st 8 (2004 AT Velocity Red, 128000 mi -original engine) met her end at the hands of a Mustang driver going 40 in a Fred Meyer parking lot while parked. I wasn't in it.

Insurance paid out, and I bought a 2004 6 spd MT Nordic Green GT with 77,000 mi. The thought of buying a different car never crossed my mind.

i have a newer more practical daily, but i still have the 8...i figured why not. its paid and i have a car cover for it. I just notice when it sits too long without driving then lil things start to screw up.

i just put in a new rad and ac compressor...need new brakes soon and a good paint resto job would be nice...as long as i dont need any major repairs ill keep it.

Never. No one would ever take care of it like I do. Only a handful of my friends can even comprehend why I still own it after all of these years. The only way it will go is in a moment of rage when I set it on fire. It's like dating a crazy hot chick, when it' s good, it's great. But when it's bad **** gets out of hand.

Lmao... This girl is high on the hot vs crazy scale. Even when **** gets bad you know its a matter of time and money to get her back.

I'm the thread starter, and I'll be straight with you. After almost 10 years of ownership I've really been trying stay tight with my RX-8. But, I was being dishonest with myself. I've changed quite a bit since I bought the car new in 2004. The 8 is still the same fine car. I retired 2+ years ago and now I'm pushing 67. I don't fit the seat well anymore and the road noise drives me crazy - and I'm not going to get any younger. So, I accepted reality and decided to move to something that (I think) is more comfortable, quieter, and still a decent performing vehicle with a small amount of utility.

I traded my beloved 8 in on a new 2014 BMW M235i yesterday. All I can say is that I love the car. The (heated) seats feel right, it's much quieter, plus I can dial up any type of driving mode I desire between economy and sport+. And the sucker goes like jet-stink.

It's been nice hanging out around here for quite a few years. BTW, my RX-8 Sport only had 30K miles on it. The right person is going to get a really nice car. I hope they don't trash it, but just enjoy it for what it is.

Forever.

I also have a 1969 Mustang and whenever anyone who ever had an old Mustang sees it the first thing out of their mouth is, "I wish I still had mine". Well, I will never have that regret. If some day, I decide I need a new or different daily driver, the RX8 will just join the old Mustang in the stable of sunny day fun cars to drive.

The 235i is nice, but maybe consider keeping the 8. Since I bought my 8 back in 2005, I've since bought two new cars - a Ram pickup in 2009 (390hp!) & a 128i softop in 2011. Glad I never sold the 8, still gets me going more than any car I've driven. And let's face it, resale sucks!

As long as it continues to put a big smile on my face, I'm keeping it.
