How long are you planning to keep your 8?

I have no plans to sell it.
Obviously, that day will come, but I plan to keep it until something forces me to move on.
I bought it because it's the perfect "driver's car," IMHO, so something with more HP wouldn't even tempt me. For once, I got *exactly* what I wanted in a car. It's my driving personality solidified in metal.
My only annoyance is the fuel mileage, and even then it's not the cost so much as the short range (barely over 200 miles before fillups, as I don't like to run it down to the warning light).

I'm on the fence.
I bought mine, a base model used (9 months old) because I had trouble borrowing money for the new GT one I wanted. (14% interest was not working for me) We lived in NYC until recently, and I have never had a car loan, and for some reason Ford/Mazda Credit didn't want me to be into them for $50k (We have a 2005 Escape as well)
So, I have yet to decide whether I am going to totally mod this one out, and keep it for several years, or just keep it pretty basic and trade it in next fall for an '06 model. Only time will tell.

I was going to ask a similar question. On the one hand, I can't wait until the car is paid off 4 years from now, because it will free up so much money that will be needed for other aspects of my life. However on the other hand, I worry that I'll be itching for something new by that time. One observation that gives me hope, however, is that the last-gen RX-7s still shine among newer cars on the road today despite being at least 9 years old. I see the RX-8 having a similar aura after aging. I can see myself being happy with this car for at least 8 years. Of course, I'm sure I'll want to throw some money into a couple of mods to keep things fresh.

No plans to sell mine at this time. Do expect Mazda to add additional features, like auto AC and other refinements. So may sell and buy a newer 8 when my warranty runs out. Will always own a rotary!

Im not thinking of selling the car for another 5-6 years? Maybe...i love the car way to much to ever think about selling it, but i will eventually get bored and want to move onto something new....but like i said, it wont be for a LONG time.

Believe it or not, I had already considered getting rid of my 8. It was one of those weeks that you get a wild hair for something new.
The car that caught my eye was the new Chrysler 300. I even went so far as test driving it. I loved the car, but didn't like the price that the dealer was asking for it.
By the dealer having suck a jacked up price, it turned me off toward working with another dealer anytime soon and me loving my car again.
Now, if I can just get rid of all these rattles! If there is anything that is going to push me over the edge, that would be it.

I can't afford to just trade in whenever I feel like it. It's my 1st brand new sports car, so it's pretty much a future project car. I plan on owning it for as long as I can. I wish I could just dump it on a whim and get the latest thing.

One of two things will happen to make me trade it in. A: a faster mazdaspeed comes out, or B: the car gives me problems before warranty wears off. Still too early to tell how this car will be, but if after like 40k miles it's still running and driving like new I'll be getting the mazdaspeed. I NEED MORE POWER!!!!!

It's a keeper. A Mazdaspeed RX-8 with more power is the only thing I'd consider trading it for. But I'm content with the power it has now and it has such great balance. So even if a new one comes out with 300 hp, I'm not sure that I'd be rushing out to get it.

I kept my MX-3 for 10 years.
I sold it to get the 8.
I've had the Miata since '99.
I guess if something comes along that affects me the way the 8 did when I first saw it, I will measure my satisfaction against my desire. :p
I can see the 8 being another 10 year car, but this will depend on the long-term durability of the thing.
Remember - its just a hunk of steel, plastic, aluminum, rubber and glass. Don't put the same emotional value on it as you do your relationships with living things.
