I am going through a divorce right now and try to justify if I want to keep my car as my only car or sell it and buy something like a honda civic. Right now I have a 94 Camry that I used 95% of the time to drive everywhere I want to go but I have to give up this car once the divorce is finalized. So my question is how is the maintance on the RX-8 if you drive like 1000 miles per month? All are highway miles. Luckily, my RX-8 is pretty good on gas as I can get more than 300 miles out of a tank when drive on highway. I just worry about general maintance cost like the tires which are expensive. I wish my monthly payment is lower than $363....I have to simplify my life quite a bit and don't know much about how durable the car is if drive everyday and lots of miles. I am easy on the car and change oil every 2500 miles. Thanks.

I drive about 2,000 miles a month and I am still happy. I got 24,000 miles out of my first set of OEM tires and not using them in the winter extends their life. I changed the plugs at 50,000 and oil every 3,500. I do other maintance items but they are track related so I will not count them. This is a easy car to live with, enjoy the car and your soon to be bachelor status.

 

Dunno, I drive it about 300 miles a month. I wouldn't want it as a daily driver that's for sure.

 

I put 1400 on it in my first month. Wasn't bad at all, best month of my life...

 

Anywhere from 1-3 k a month. Almost at 45k now. Aside from normal scheduled maintenance, I don't do anything unusual. Got 32K (!!!!!) out of the stock tires (noisy as all hell by then) and I get the oil changed every 2.5k, but those are the only expenses I've really had related to maintenance.

 

I drive around 1500 to 2000 miles a month, this car is very easy to live with on day to day driving, and if you can get 300 miles to the tank then having this car as a daily driver isn't really that bad for you, but it also means that you're not enjoying the car as it should. :p

 

Had mine since late June and only have about 1800 miles on it. It's a short drive to work and I don't get out much these days...

 

I know I will regret after I sell the car....I just can't see myself driving it in ice/snow with lots of salt/sand on the road. It is such a beautiful car. I spend time every morning looking at it before I go to work. And if I drive the car to work I alway find stupid reason to go out during lunch break just to sit in the car. One thing I know is if I decide to keep it, I will have to install all season tire on the car just in case I get stuck driving in snow. And yes, 18" tire are expensive as hell!

 

17" winter tire / rim combos can be found for under $1,000 or from time to time here. Don't get rid of this car because of snow tires.

 

For the tires, many members here recommend Pirelli Pzero Nero M&S, which cost about $150/tire from Tirerack and are better than the OE Potenzas($225)/Dunlops($250) in every way. I've heard they're not too bad in snow either

 

i drive my car 2k-2.5k a month. gas is about the average (i get about 240mi. - 260mi. a tank) everybody here gets. it's a really fun car to drive. and at $363/mo. i would definately keep the car. i pay WAY more than that to have mine.

Seriously though, we are all going to tell you to keep the car, but in the end it's your decision to make. Don't have others think for you. You are an adult and can think for yourself. Anything you decide will be your decision and your decision only. Of course we would all be glad to see you happy driving around in your 8, but it's up to you to decide to keep it or not based on your current circumstances.

 

Thanks all of your guys for opionions. I have to see after divorce has settle how much $ per month I will have. That will decide if I can keep the car or not. Right now winter is almost over and I will keep the car for as long as I can. If I decide to keep the car then I would get all weather tires for it. I love this car. The engine just sings, especially with the new corksport exhaust and it is like an extension of your thought. Two hundred miles drive is not long enough in this car. I always wish for more. So far I have zero problem and the only thing I pay for is gas and oil change. If it keep up like this after warrantee is expire then it probably be the best car I have ever own.

 

Another 2000 mile/monther here. Allready disposed of the Potenzas at 15,000 miles, replaced with yokohama avs/es100. Get about 17mpg, but then, I do have a right foot made of uranium (depleted, of course )

Car's great for daily driving. You arrive refreshed, not feeling like you just drove the Grand Prix of Monaco.

 

Here's another 2,000 miles/month person. I love it for daily driving and missinmahseven has my view right on the dot. :D

 

During the 1st year I drove about 4k miles a month

 

I put on about 22,000 in 12 months, so just under 2000 miles a month.

 

I have driven 1400 so far this month. But I knoe I will be a 2000 miles/month person as well. Do lots of driving from Los Angeles to San Diego.

 

I drive about 2125 miles a month.

I'm trying to drive less. I'm concerned about the value of the car dipping too much. Otherwise, I have no reliability concerns.

Here we go defending rotary reliability AGAIN. I have a job that requires me to drive anwhere from 3000-5000 miles a month. I bought my RX-8 on 8-6-03. It has always been my daily driver except Jan-Feb 2004 before there were snow tires for it. Since then I have put roughly 82,500 miles on it. Nothing has ever broken or failed mechanically. AND, just for the record - I DRIVE THE SNOT OUT OF THIS CAR !!!! It sees redline probably every other day.

Buy it, drive it, beat on it. Assuming you maintain it religiously (oil, plugs, etc etc)it will not let you down.

 

26,000 miles in 24 months...

Only thing I've done was oil changes every 3,000, plus I had the tranny/diff fluids swapped to synthetics (redline).

 

My last set of tires were $290 Goodyear F1's.

The new set cost me about $125 per tire. Both sets were 245/25/19. I forget the brand of the new set, but they sound (road noise) similar to the F1's. Ride is slightly harsher though.

 

Unless its a traffic jam, you are probably gonna enjoy every moment of driving the 8.
