How many people here have a beater?
Im about to hit 36k miles on the 8 and thinking about buying a beater *** 92 Civic or something to drive to help keep the miles low. I plan on keeping the 8 for a long time.
How many of you have done this? Am I just wasting my money?

Honda FIT. Got it 3 months ago.
Fun Factor is Absolutely Zero. But its pretty reliable other than the TPMS keeps dying (Going to visit the dealer again this week, argh), if it dies 2 more times. Im going to freaking Lemon the whole car. pisses me off.

The wife bought an 07 kia rio. 38 miles a gallon. easy maintenance. I commute 80 miles round trip. I have 07 white water pearl with 13800 on it and decided to park and save gas and milage. Wfe has 06 liberty. 25 mpg on it but she already has 31k on it. parked both and drive kia

I have an mx3 that I can drive whenever I want to.. but every time I want to save some gas I just think of the fun I'd miss in my 8.. so the mx3 sits in peace. She gets alot of love from my dad though .

I picked up a 2000 Saturn SL 5-speed to drive to work. The thing gets 38 mpg. That should also cut about 10,000 a year off from my 8. With an 80 mile round trip commute the gas savings should pay for the car quickly.

A beater is a nice luxury. I was GIVEN a Geo Metro Convertible 5 speed. Yeah, it's got crappy build quality and I've never driven a slower car, but it still works perfectly even after all the abuse I've shown it. I can park and not worry about door dings/scratches and it's actually kinda fun to drop the top and redline it in every gear without ever exceeding the speed limit. It also dropped the cost of insurance significantly over the RX-8 alone… and I'm averaging 47 mpg on regular.
Edit: The Metro also keeps me appreciating the 8. So many people say the RX-8 is slow… they don't even know what slow is.

The funny thing is, my RX-8 is sort of my 'beater.' I have had my SVX for almost ten years now, and shortly after I bought it I decided to get a beater. A cousin gave me an '85 Subaru GL wagon. The head gasket blew. Then I bought a '93 Justy, which I started autocrossing. That led to an '86 MR2, because I still wanted to keep it cheap.
Eventually my wife said I had to have a car with four doors and encouraged me to get something a little more...modern. You know, with AC and stuff.

I kept my 96 Ford Probe when I bought the Rx-8 because:
1. Having it insured as my first car lowers the insurance on the 8 by more than the insurance is on the Probe in total.
2. It's mechanically sound but looks like crap so it's resale value is low.
3. If I'm going some place where I have to park on the street, the car is worth nothing.
4. I'm not a pedestrian when the 8 is in a shop.
Then, I went turbo and even though the probe has no A/C, the 26+ mpg mixed driving started looking pretty good. Plus, my new appartment has me parking on the street so the 8 spends a lot of time in my mom's driveway. It needs a set of new rotors pretty bad though.
