91 Escort Gt with 190K and still getting 28 to 32 mpg depending on time of year. Also restoring my 79 Jeep CJ-5, no idea on miles as the OD didn't work when I got it. Restoring due to a fun little roll in a snow storm a couple of years ago.

Speaking of beaters, here's a story involving a coworker/friend of mine who is humorously jealous of my car (he drives a WRX).
He has a chronic cough, and I heard him coughing in an office he was visiting from way down the hall. I had to walk by this office on my out so I said my goodbyes and mentioned how his cough gave him away, and jokingly added that "he should have it checked out." He replied with "I have had it checked out, I have two weeks to live, want my car?" to which I responded "no thanks, I already have a beater."
The look on his face was priceless.

1999 F-150 extended cab pick up. Inherited from father in-law last year.
It actually gets worse gas mileage so it only gets driven on the weekends and whenever the weather gets really ugly.
1967 Cougar 390GT... also gets worse gas mileage (tripple the torque )and only gets driven as a ride of last resort. Was the back up car before we got the truck.
1969 Mustang Mach I. Currently in garage for complete rebuild. Will be driven asap.

i have a company car, which is nice. an 08 altima (4 cyl) and my real beater is an 86 isuzu trooper, which i love to death, but it's out of commission for another couple of weeks (crashed the valves, stupid interference engine) but i keep driving the urine out of my 8 because after i get back from a long business trip all i wanna do is thrash my car around...

I'll chip in with my 2 cents. My comments echo some of what's already been said. I had a 2001 VW GTI (with the VR6) that I kept after I bought my RX-8. I finally sold it recently and I am now back down to one car. (VW rant.... The car was never very reliable and over the past two years became a total money pit POS. Never again will I buy VW. Rant over.)
Pros
- Your beater can take the abuse when you know the road conditions are going to be hard on your car (e.g. winter, etc...)
- If you live in a city, you can park your beater on the street with little fear.
- Your beater will more than likely get better gas mileage. (offset by insurance)
Cons
- Even if you are one driver with two cars, you end up paying substantially more in insurance. You will get a little discount, but you will end up paying more with most insurance companies.
- Whenever you're driving your beater you are not driving your RX-8 (well, duh!). I have no regrets with selling my GTI since I enjoy driving my RX-8 so much more. Go out and drive your RX-8 and enjoy it.
- Finding a place to park two cars can sometimes be a hassle. Make sure you have the space for two.
Those are some thoughts that come immediately to mind. Good luck.
Cheers

One of my beaters was a CX7, but I sold it a few months ago. The other beater is a 97 T-Bird, and its about to go up for sale. Good car, low price, PM me if you may be interested. I'm about ten minutes from you.

My beater is a 1990 Nissan bare-bones pickup truck that I bought new. The paint is shot to hell, but the thing runs great and is real handy at times. It only has 77,000 miles on it after all these years. I call it "Old Blue."

I'm looking for a winter beater. Probably going to go with an old Subaru Impreza or Legacy. I want some AWD action b/c I am not driving the 8 in the snow. Did it once this past winter and never again.
