How many will buy the 16X when it comes out?
I will be #1 to say I will guaranty I will! Who will be #2 ? Let's let Mazda know we will be there as long as they keep trying all by their selves to develop the Rotary. My first of seven RX's had 100hp and now it's more then doubled and the gas mileage has improved too. Here is an idea...

What are they gonna put it in?
By 2012 (when the 16x might be prepared for mass production), RX-8 sales will have dropped into the hundreds per month, world-wide.
The car is going to go away.
It isn't gonna go into the Miata and they aren't going to make another 2-seat sportscar.
Put it in the CX-9? lol
The rotary isn't all that interesting to me. Its just the engine that is in the RX-8, which is a car that excites me. If it were a 4-banger, I still would have bought it.
So, I don't care what they try to do with that motor (as long as it doesn't bankrupt them).
Just build an exciting car.
But they wont. They believe the Speed3 is exciting.

No its not.
I've always maintained my stance as a car guy - not a rotary guy.
If its uses gas and air, I'm interested. Especially if I can force it in there.
The most important thing to me is feel.
I'm all about how the car feels - and that has a lot of components beyond just drivability.
There is a lot of aesthetic that goes into a great car and its all much more important to me than the specifics of the Otto cycle.

...as long as you keep it pointed in a straight line. And you don't try to accelerate too hard.
As far as the 16x - if it's the same or better than the 8, I will be a VERY happy customer. I miss my 8 terribly, and I only hope that something similar will be on the market the next time I'm looking for a new car. If the next RX isn't as good as the 7/8 I'll probably end up in an MX5, which is pretty much as close as you can get to the experience of a rotary in a piston engine.

The "Rotary" is what makes the RX-8 the way it is, any other heavier engine would kill it's sweet handling and perfect weight distribution.
For those thinking of putting a 16X in their RX-8, forget about it.
If it has the 09 RX-8 engine changes (EMPOS, etc) which is more than likely, the cost of putting the 16X in a 8 would be extreme, that is if you can do it.
You are talking changing all engine wiring looms, PCM/ECU, then what are you going to do about Oil Metering...more cost for the new electric system.
Plus the engine itself..

Do you mean engine or car with the engine in it? I'll probably still be in college (grad school) at that point, so I can almost guarantee I wont have the next rotary powered car. I'd only be getting the engine if it was a cost effective replacement if my 8's engine died on me. But as ash said, it probably wouldn't be cheap or even comparable to just replacing the engine with a reman renny. So, chances are I wont even get the engine lol. I'll definitely go to my local dealership and give it a test drive though

Ok first off I'm not up to date here with this 16x what the hell is it?? Also screw the speed3. I'm not happy with a front wheel drive car F that ish I don't care if the turbo could boost an amazing 500rwhp and give me a BJ at the same time I still need my tail end to swing out, I gotta have my rear wheel. I love my 8 and never had a 7 but I think that car looks awesome as hell too. But what is this 16x? Rotary suv that revs up to 9k for my baby mama? Lol

If its a 2-seater. 90% chance I will buy it
if its 4 banger. 50% chance I will buy it
if its under 2800 lbs, 90% chance I will buy it.
if it gets better mpg, 90% chance I will buy it
if it gets more TQ, 90% chance I will buy it.
if I become rich, 100% chance I will buy it
no seriously, If Mazda can somehow bump the TQ to 200 f-lbs, which is unlikely. I will buy it for sure.
if not, dont know.

Next car for me Corvette or Viper . I wont need the four seats anymore , plus I will keep my 8 I only have 18,000 on it , 3 years now plus all the mods .
Mazda would have to put rockets on top for me to even look at it . Just looking at the 09 , feel they went in another direction , Im just not feeling it .
My 2 cents ....................

if they keep up their promises (lightweight, more sport oriented car) then Yes.
If they want to follow the progress of modern cars full of useless stuff and with boat-like handling then nope.

As compared to my friend Jeff (MM), I am a rotor head and an extreme one at that. I am in love with the smoothness and calm revving ability and don't mind it's faults.
I will support Mazda if they build a lightweight car with this engine.

if it's a 6 speed manual gearbox, then I'll get it.
If the rumor for 6 speed automated manual gearbox, then I might have to pass.
I don't track, so the automated manual box is pretty pointless to me.
I do have all the admiration in the world for the technology though, it's been proven to shave pretty good time for lapping purposes.

"Automated manual" aka auto-Rev matching as in the 370Z, is a good thing track and street.
