Fill-up after the light comes on and stays on steady is usually about 13.5 gals. So, if you added 13.5 gals with the light on steady at the 200 mile mark, your mileage would be about 15 mpg. (Not particularly exciting mileage, but possible.) Since the tank holds 15.9 gals, theoretically you should have about 35 miles of driving left in the tank. However, there are factors that might limit that to less than 35 miles, so you would be wise to start looking for a filling station immediately when the light stays on.

Keep in mind that the fuel-low light may come on briefly and then go out depending on the attitude of your vehicle and your driving situation at any given time when the fuel level is low. The above calculations do not apply to that situation.

Hang in there about the MPG thing. Mine started out that way, but now turns on around 260 miles; approx 13.2 Gal to refill it. Roughly 20MPG.

^ Mine is almost exactly the same. I think it's a 15.9 gal tank so you probably have a couple gallons left.

9000rx8, you may want to check what ECU version (a.k.a flash) you have. The newer flashes (M or higher) seem to improve MPG. Also, give it about 1000 miles and the MPG should improve. I average 20MPG and am pretty happy.

Wierd though. On my car the first three quarters (from full to 1/4 tank) all go about 80 miles. So at 1/4 tank I'm at about 240 - 250 miles. I used to think "cool, 320 miles to a tank" but entire last 1/4 is always gone in 10 miles.

The real question is how many miles did you drive with the light on?

10-12 miles

i've driven better than 60 with mine on a few times and only managed to cram about 14 gallons in it when it was 1-2 ticks below E.

( that's highway 100% though and I'm getting roughly 24-26 mpg highway )

My light used to come on at about 14, then I got the M flash it it seems to come on anywhere between 12.5 gal and 13.5 gal. I know the m shouldn't have anything to do with it, but yet, there was a change...

I usually get 180-200 mi out of 14 gal

which is 12-14 mpg for those keeping track

I think you got had by the dealer. What most people don't know is that there is one other model than the Base, Sport, Touring, and GT that we all know and love. The 5th version is the Low Gas Milage version, or the "LGM" in Mazda vernacular.

Mine was the regular Touring verision that has gotten about 19-20 mpg since I've had it. I've got the gas milage chart of every fillup to prove it. This includes routine autcrosses and track schools.

I think your dealer sold you a Low Gas Milage version.

If you're going 85 like I was, you'll get about 30 miles until you stall. Found that out the hard way.

Mine came on this morning. I drove about 11 miles with it on, then put 13.615 gallons in the (supposedly?) 15.9 gallon tank.

I got 15.51 MPG on that tank so "in theory" I could have driven another 35 miles before "bingo".

The "good" news - this tank was mostly communting and the car only has 400 miles on it.

The bad news is that I have been short-shifting for break-in as the manual says

Mine turns on after about 250 miles and when I fill up around 13.1 gallons. Figure I've got another 50 miles more or less until it dies on me.
